We are recruiting for our 2025/26 Apprentices to complete the Highways and Maintenance Apprenticeship with SQS. Our scheme will last for a minimum of 1 year and 1 week, during this time you will be expected to attend a 3 week initial training programme at our Scratchwood depot.
The remainder of the scheme will be made up of 80% on the job training working out of one of our designated depots and 20% off the job training to be held at our Scratchwood depot.
On the job training will require you to work with bituminous materials and paved surfaces, back-fill and spoil removal within our highways reinstatement teams.
Apprentices will be recruited on a fixed term basis and the duration of the scheme is dependent on the length of time it takes them to complete the course, but we expect this to be at least a year and 1 week. Successful Apprentices will have every opportunity to be considered for a full-time established role with SQS.

Responsibilities
1. Understand and follow SQS Safe Work Procedures, to ensure your own safety and safety of others.
2. Excavate holes and trenches in the public highway, conforming to current legislation.
3. Install street ironwork.
4. Search for and mark underground services.
5. Understand and implement workplace health, safety, welfare and environment.
6. Safe operation of powered tools and equipment.
7. Understand and implement signing, lighting and guarding to current legislation.
8. Conform and contribute to productive working practices.
9. Reinstate excavation and highways surfaces to current specification.
10. Assist with recording work activities on handheld electronic devices.
11. Assist with basic vehicle and plant checks.
Skills and Experience
1. Acts and behaves safely.
2. Takes personal responsibility for work produced and escalates concerns when appropriate.
3. Willing to work within The SQS Safe Systems of Work.
4. Ensures work is accurate, timely and prepared to the appropriate required standards.

10. To carry out any other reasonable duties that may be directed or implied from time to time commensurate to the post and/or organisational requirement.
All applicants need to be at least 18 years old due to Health and Safety restrictions and must hold a full driving license, for at least a year with access to a vehicle.
