The trainee nurse clinician will follow a clinical / theoretical pathway working toward the development of advanced autonomous clinical practice, across traditional boundaries and augmenting the medical role, utilising assessment, decision making and diagnostic skills.
By the end of their training they will independently order and interpret investigations and will demonstrate the ability to safely manage his/her own caseload, identifying the need to involve other members of the MDT, ensuring high quality, effective management of patients with urological conditions.
The fully qualified and recognised nurse clinician will take the lead, participate in educational issues; clinical supervision; research & audit; evidence-based practice and provide mentorship to other clinical staff working in the field of general surgery and urology.
Main duties of the job
1. Undertake history and physical examination to accurately assess the patient's condition. Critically analyse findings to form a diagnosis and develop appropriate treatment plan.
2. Order, interpret and act upon relevant diagnostic tests and procedures.
3. Interpret, convey and relay complex and conflicting information to MDT members/patients/relatives in possibly stressful situations, which may be delicate or offensive in nature breaking bad news.
4. Act as a clinical expert providing continuous support to the nursing staff and other MDT members within and outside designated area of work.
5. Undertake advanced (invasive and non-invasive) procedures pertaining to patient need, in accordance with appropriate training and clinical supervision.
6. Act autonomously admitting and discharging patients, referring to appropriate specialists/care agencies.
7. Prescribe medication in accordance with current legislation and trust policy
8. Participate in ward 'hot' and 'cold' clinics as required

22. Act as a role model through demonstration of high standards of practice, providing a clinical environment that motivates and encourages effective working partnerships.
23. Participate in multidisciplinary ward rounds, case conferences, clinical and audit meetings.
24. Gain informed consent from patients for procedures undertaken by self or on behalf of others, both written and verbal, according to trust policy.
25. Provide evidence-based specialist knowledge and advice to patients, families/carers throughout the patients journey to meet their physical, emotional and psychological needs.

LINE MANAGEMENT/SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES
27. Provide evidenced based leadership ensuring that practice is disseminated to the MDT.

29. Personally prioritise and schedule the management of patient caseloads ensuring optimisation of resources
30. Provide support for senior nursing staff in relation to staff development and complaints.
31. Remain flexible to the needs of patients and the Trust in the provision of quality service delivery.
32. Be an agent for change, monitoring and evaluating practice and generating new and innovative solutions to clinical practice problems to enable delivery of a better service and strive towards advancing practice.
33. Be involved in strategic health planning and respond to trust strategies, initiatives and targets, both regionally and nationally.
34. Participate in the recruitment and selection of staff.
35. Lead/guide nursing and medical staff in the appropriate and timely care of the patient.
36. Network locally, regionally and nationally to share and exchange ideas and principles.
37. Act as a resource providing advice, support and guidance to all members of the health care team both within the directorate and trust wide.
38. Provide an active leadership role in contributing to own departmental issue pertaining to clinical governance agendas and shared governance within the trust maintaining standards, risk management, clinical audit and research, standard setting, benchmarking, evidence based practice etc.

EDUCATIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES
41. Identify areas for improvement and work with clinical staff to develop and implement action plans.

Assist in identifying training and educational needs of the nursing staff/medical staff and participate in its responsibility for ones own professional development and continually assess and acknowledge areas for development as they arise.Provide clinical supervision, mentorship, preceptorship and tuition to the trust MDT and other trust members and educational organisations.
RESEARCH & AUDIT
43. Implement/develop strategies in line with evidence-based practice NICE/DoH
44. Be involved in identification, development and implementation of relevant policy/guidelines to aid future management by the MDT.
45. Make efficient use of existing resources and identify an appropriate need for stock/equipment levels whilst ensuring efficiency/cost effectiveness is managed and treatment/management of patients is not delayed.
