ROLE SUMMARY:
Northfields International School is a premier independent co-educational day school in Mauritius that provides an English-medium education for over 1200 boys and girls aged between 18 months and 18 years. The Cover Teacher will be expected to supervise students carrying out pre-prepared exercises when teaching staff are on short-term absence. The key role is to manage a classroom, ensuring that students remain on task with the work that has been set.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
Cover Duties
1. Supervising work that has been set in accordance with cover work set by the teacher and school policy.
2. Liaising with teaching staff with regards to work set for a class.
3. Managing the behavior of students to ensure a constructive environment whilst undertaking work.
4. Dealing with immediate problems or emergencies in accordance with the school's policies and procedures.
5. Collecting any completed work and resources after the lesson and returning them to the appropriate teacher.
6. Ensure students are focused and on track to meeting the lesson objectives.
7. Invigilate internal and/or external examinations.
Pastoral Duties
1. Act as Class Tutor, supporting the progress and well-being of students.
2. Register attendance, encourage participation and address individual student concerns.
3. Prepare reports, action plans and communicate with staff about student needs.
Professional Requirements
1. Understand professional responsibilities and operate within school policies.
2. Maintain subject expertise and uphold high standards of conduct.
3. Work collaboratively with staff and contribute to school activities, meetings and events.
4. Engage with parents and the learning community while pursuing personal professional development.
THE IDEAL CANDIDATE WILL HAVE:
Essential Qualifications and Experience
* A bachelor’s degree or higher in a relevant subject area, with a PGCE or B.Ed. qualification.
* Minimum of 2–3 years of teaching experience in secondary education.
* Experience in using ICT to enhance teaching and learning.
Desirable Qualifications and Experience
* Familiarity with international programmes such as IB MYP, IGCSE, and IBDP.
* Previous experience in an international school setting.
