The opportunity:
It’s an exciting time to join Markel as our business grows. We have just moved into brand-new innovative offices in Leeds city centre right next to the train station, and we currently have a new opportunity for a Senior Underwriter to join our highly respected team (3 days in the office / 2 days from home). This exciting opportunity is based within the renewals department and you will be dealing with a wide variety of Professional and Management risks and wider financial lines risks including Cyber and Technology risks. This is an area of considerable growth and a great opportunity to join an established but growing team. This team is often an integral part of projects developing the book and improving the way we do business.
This Senior Underwriter role will be an integral part of the Professional and Management risks renewals team providing an excellent underwriting service for brokers in the UK. As a senior member of the team you will be required to be pro-active, build and maintain good relationships internally and externally. Monitor and analyse broker activity to identify success and areas for improvement and provide feedback to the team leader. You will have responsibility for renewals with a desire to be visible to our brokers and policyholders.
What you’ll be doing:
* Handle a portfolio and risks, underwrite large and complex renewal cases within the defined underwriting authority.
* Collaborate with the Markel Claims team on claims on complex cases to ensure best outcomes for policyholders and Markel.
* Demonstrate and promote a thorough knowledge of company guidelines and authority levels in order to achieve profitability and underwriting objectives.
* Provide excellent service to our brokers, prioritising renewals and mid-term adjustments to ensure deadlines are met and maximising our business development opportunities.
* Attend underwriting and broker meetings as required throughout the year and to provide insight into developments, trends and feedback on market conditions.
* Handle renewal cases working as appropriate with the broker to secure renewal and upsell/cross-sell additional covers.
* Build and maintain excellent working relationships with the technical department and the wider business.
* Develop team members’ technical knowledge through mentoring, day to day underwriting referrals and exposure to underwriting risks.
* Assisting the team and wider business with ad hoc projects.
Our must haves:
* Strong experience of financial lines underwriting including Professional liability, Cyber and Management risks ideally.
* The ability to review wordings, lead in the complexities of drafting clauses/endorsements and tailored wordings.
* Excellent written and spoken communication skills.
* A high level of accuracy and attention to detail.
* Consistent record in building and developing broker relationships.
* Ability to regularly analyse competitors’ products, capabilities and appetite and share within the team.
* Ability to renew business whilst maintaining underwriting discipline.
* ACII and/or similar qualification preferred.
