The Divisional Medical Director (DMD) will, as a member of the Divisional Senior Management Team, play an active role in contributing to the strategic direction of the Division and the ongoing provision of high-quality services which are safe and efficient. As a senior medical leader within the Division, the DMD will work closely with the Divisional and Clinical Directors and contribute to the overall vision, direction, and performance of the Division with respect to the medical staff and their role in service delivery. The DMD will be accountable to the Divisional Director for the provision of high-quality services which are safe and efficient.
The post holder will work with Chris Cunningham, Divisional Director, Lisa Butcher Divisional Director of Nursing, and Harriet Rudd-Jones, Divisional Director of Operations. The DMD will play an active role in contributing to the strategic direction of the Division.
Key Responsibilities
1. Appraisal
o Co-ordinate the approved appraisal system, ensuring a process is in place and operating within guidelines.
o Monitor the implementation of appraisal within recommended.
o Prepare an annual Divisional Appraisal report for the Divisional Director.
2. Job Planning
o Provide leadership and support for Job Planning within the Division for Consultants, Associate Specialists, and Specialty Doctors.
o Co-ordinate the implementation of Job Planning.
o Monitor the completion of Job Plans within agreed timescales.
o Advise and mediate in cases that cannot be resolved by Clinical Directors within existing job planning guidance.
o Ensure that the Job Planning process and outcomes reflect the Division/Directorate's service capacity needs.
3. Implementation of HR Policies for Medical Staff
o Co-ordinate and monitor implementation of all relevant policies including:
+ Annual leave
+ Study leave
+ Performance
+ Sickness absence
+ Locum cover (long and short-term)
+ Statutory and Mandatory Training
o Liaise with the Senior Business Partner for Human Resources for appropriate advice and support.
o Lead on resolving issues relating to the poor performance of medical staff within the Division.
4. Clinical Governance Responsibilities
o Support the Divisional Director of Nursing and Clinical Directors to ensure robust systems and processes are in place to review and manage remedial action emerging from incidents, complaints, risk identification and assessment, litigation, audit, and clinical indicators.
o Lead the Trust's process for Maintaining High Professional Standards within the Division.
o Provide advice on the application of existing and new standards and guidelines e.g., NICE, NSFs, Royal College Guidelines.
5. Service Development and Improvement
o Regularly review key service data in conjunction with the Clinical Directors to monitor individual consultant performance.
o Provide leadership within the Division on service reconfigurations.
o Lead on the development and implementation of medical workforce plans.
6. Communication
o Maintain effective communications with clinicians within the Division.
o Actively promote the development of clinical and professional networks.
Minimum Requirements
A practicing clinical professional with knowledge of the NHS, its infrastructure, and the recent reforms. Applicants should be a Consultant or SAS Doctor.
Desirable Criteria
* Postgraduate management/further study qualification.
* Experience of working within the NHS in an acute hospital environment.
* Recent experience in managing clinical services.
* Knowledge and understanding of clinical governance.
* Experience of change management.
