Clinical Fellow in General Surgery
As University Hospitals Dorset, we are a three-site acute trust with ‘university hospital’ status through our partnership with Bournemouth University, working with an annual budget of £730m.
We offer highly regarded health services, employing some 10,000 staff. Our ambitious £250m estates programme is well on the way to delivering state-of-the-art facilities over the next two years to meet the current and future healthcare needs of the populations we serve.
In an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty with over seven miles of sandy beaches, you’ll find inspirational opportunities to achieve your perfect work/life balance. With the New Forest and the Purbecks on our doorstep, we’re also less than three hours from London by road or train. The thriving towns of Poole, Bournemouth, and Christchurch give way to idyllic villages and unspoilt landscapes just minutes from our hospitals.
We believe that having a diverse workforce, and allowing people to be themselves, is essential in ensuring we offer an inclusive, welcoming, and productive place to work.
We especially welcome applications from minority groups in the community who may be underrepresented in our workforce.
At UHD, our active staff network groups are the Women's Network, Black Asian Minority Ethnic Group (BAME), Pride Network, European (EU), Pro Ability Staff Network, and the Armed Forces Support Group.
As a Trust, we are proudly signed up to the Disability Confident and Armed Forces Covenant guaranteed interview schemes.
Job overview
We are delighted to announce the further recruitment to our highly competitive General Surgery Junior Clinical Fellow programme.
After the successful delivery of this programme over the last 3 years specifically designed to develop trainees' ability to progress into training programmes, we are looking to appoint the next cohort of full-time Junior Clinical Fellows (JCFs) to start in August 2024 on an initial 12-month contract.
Applicants are expected to have a major interest in a career in General Surgery. MRCS or equivalent is not essential but desirable, and basic clinical surgical skills (FY2 or equivalent) should be demonstrated. We would expect the successful applicant to be able to perform at the level expected of a Day 1 Core Surgical Trainee.
Candidates must be fully registered with the General Medical Council and be eligible to work in the UK.
We do reserve the right to close this advertisement early if we receive a high volume of suitable applications.

The post holder will work with a team of 12 experienced Consultant Surgeons supported by a team of 10 registrars, 3 SHOs, and 7 FY1s. Depending on the applicant's area of interest, there may be opportunities to gain specialist training in emergency surgery, colorectal, or upper GI surgery.
The duties of the post include:
1. Out-patient clinics – managing new and follow-up patients independently, under supervision and teaching as required.
2. Operating – independently, under supervision, assisting, and training as appropriate.
3. Attendance at and participation in MDT meetings.
4. Daily ward rounds.
5. Supervision of junior surgical staff.
6. Active participation in clinical audit, governance, and research.
7. Teaching of medical students and surgical trainees.
8. Pre and post-operative care of admissions.
9. Participation in middle grade on-call rota (currently working a 1 in 10 rota but subject to change).
Other Duties: The job description is not intended to be exhaustive but provides an indication of the range and complexity of the work to be undertaken. Other duties may need to be carried out in consultation with clinical colleagues and the designated Consultant.
Working for our organisation
Our values define who we are as #TeamUHD. They underpin everything we do now and in the future. They define how we treat our patients, visitors, and each other, our valued teammates and colleagues.
UHD are investing in services across the Trust, with many being transformed and developed following merger and the New Hospital Programme.
This means that some services may move site this year or next, either temporarily or long term. Recruiting Managers interviewing for this role will be happy to answer any specific questions that you have about this at interview.
There is a planned move for this service anticipated when this role and base of work will relocate. Upon relocation of the role/service, excess mileage allowance/reimbursement will not apply, and any travel between the postholder's home and work base will be classified as a commute. Any other changes unrelated to this will be handled in line with Trust/National terms and conditions.
