Bloomberg News is seeking a Data Visualization Developer who thinks creatively about visual storytelling and possesses the technical skills to implement their ideas.
You should be able to conceptualize smart graphical and interactive elements that help readers engage with our stories and make sense of complex ideas. While you don't have to be an expert at everything, your passion for creative coding should include some of the following: generating chart forms and various kinds of maps, building games, working with video, rendering 3D scenes, coding fragment shaders, as well as using animation and browser interactions to drive interest.
Our team is highly collaborative and we value people who are motivated to work with others and pitch in when news events unfold - both planned and unplanned. We encourage each other and share our ideas and knowledge. You should also be a supportive and engaging member of the team, sharing feedback with others as they formulate their ideas or seek help with their code.
Prior experience working in news, including freelance, is preferred. You'll have the support of other editors and journalists across our global graphics team, but your ability to jump into projects and apply these skills will help the team take ownership of critical stories.
We'll trust you to:
* Apply your skills and curiosity in collaboration with team members and newsroom colleagues in ideating, reporting, designing and building visual stories that can be fast-moving or long-term.
* Develop full digital experiences, visual elements and user interfaces for the Web and other digital platforms.
* Write performant and optimized code that functions across devices, and guide colleagues on best practices to help improve their work as well.
* Develop reproducible workflows, or build simple tools to streamline workflows, that can be utilized by other team members.
* Share your expertise; brainstorm ideas with team members and support them as they seek technical solutions in pursuit of their own visualization ideas.
You'll need to have:
* Expertise in front-end web development using modern HTML, CSS, JavaScript and frontend frameworks. Our team uses Svelte, so experience or willingness to learn is expected.
* Expertise using SVG, Canvas and WebGL/WebGPU to render graphics in the browser, including libraries like D3, Three.js and p5.js.
* Familiarity with A11y best practices.
* Familiarity with design considerations in the data visualization creation process, including layout, typography and user experience, and familiarity or willingness to learn design software such as Adobe Illustrator or Figma.
* Familiarity with data reporting - the ability to collect, manage, munge and analyze data from various sources and formats using R, Python, or other programmatic methods, is preferred but not required.
* Familiarity or interest in topics core to Bloomberg News coverage - including business, finance, markets, economics, technology, and government matters - and an eagerness to develop subject-matter expertise in these areas.
Apply if you think we're a good match. We'll get in touch to let you know that the next steps are, but in the meantime feel free to have a look at:
