Lecturer: English - Prison Education - HMP Maidstone Location: HMP Maidstone, 36 County Road, Maidstone, ME14 1UZ Hours: 37.5 hours per week, 52 weeks per year Salary: Up to £37,996 per annum Reporting To: Deputy Education Manager IN SHORT MK College Group have an exciting opportunity for a skilled English Lecturer to join the team based at HMP Maidstone. As a Lecturer for HMP Maidstone, you will be actively engaging prison-based students in Functional Skills English courses, from Entry Level 1, up to higher Level 2. You will design and deliver the course in your own style, complete with creative classes and resources. Many of the students have a diverse range of needs and learning abilities, they will have often had a negative experience with education. As a successful Lecturer, you will truly inspire them and provide students with a positive learning experience, giving them the skills and confidence they need for life after release. We are seeking an individual who can plan for and communicate with a variety students to inspire and motivate them. The classes have a maximum of 10 students, supported by a mentor. The sessions are approximately 3 hours long, so lessons will need to be adaptable, innovative, and imaginative. You will support students with progressing towards achieving a Functional Skills qualification through City and Guilds. Maidstone is one of the oldest prisons in the UK having been in operation for over 200 years. As a working prison, offenders are expected to work or engage in education to gain qualifications and skills for life after release. Work opportunities include: kitchens, grounds recycling, cleaning teams, peer mentoring, woodwork, laundry, printshop, tailors, digital media, and much more. HMP Maidstone’s focus is firmly fixed on reducing reoffending and preventing future victims of crime by preparing offenders for their release through accredited intervention programmes, skill and vocational based training and education, in a pro social environment. Courses at HMP Maidstone include ESOL, Maths, English, IT, Food Preparation, Barista, Bricklaying, Multi skills, Plastering, ESOL, Peer mentoring, Learning Support and much more. The education delivery hours are Monday to Thursday 8.30am – 11.15am, 13.45pm – 16.15pm and on Fridays 8.30am – 11.15am when learners sit their assessments and exams, with staff working on-site 8:00am – 16:30pm each day and 8:00am – 1:00pm on Fridays. Class sizes typically range from 8-10 learners. HMP Maidstone is in the city centre within a 5-minute walk of Maidstone East Train Station. There is no parking onsite, however the local Civil Service Social Club does provide parking for a nominal fee. There is also parking at the train station, an NCP carpark, and a Ringo carpark (free for electric vehicles). The prison runs a creative wood workshop in which the prisoners make many items including picnic benches, games tables, children’s toys, bird houses, wall plaques, and much more besides from recycled wood. All proceeds from the sales of the items made are donated to the Making Miracles charity. There is a staff mess on site, run by MK College catering tutors and prisoners, where there is a monthly focus on cuisine produced, such as Black History Month where the prisoners learn about African American history and make typical dishes including Jollof Rice, Chicken Creole and jerk Chicken. The prisoners in Education take part in a bi-monthly Book and Film event, enjoying the film versions of books they are reading for that period and reviewing them.
