Position: Health & Safety Lead
Rate: £500 per Day
Contract Duration: 6 months

Hays is partnering with a local council to recruit an interim Health and Safety Lead for an initial 6-month contract, offering a competitive rate of £500 per day. This role will collaborate with the transformation team in Waste to establish a comprehensive Health & Safety Vision and plan for the service. The transformation program includes route optimization (routes, vehicles, crews), and this role is crucial in ensuring the right H&S setup.
Responsibilities:
• Ensure compliance, improvement, and embed safety within operational practices across Street Scene services.
• Provide expertise, question unsafe practices, and promote best practices.
• Mitigate risks and enhance safety performance in line with Birmingham City Council's policies.
• Lead the development and implementation of H&S strategies for the Street Scene division (Waste, Street Management, Parks, Fleet), ensuring alignment with BCC's overarching H&S objectives.
• Engage with senior leaders and external stakeholders (e.g., enforcement agencies, contractors) to ensure compliance with H&S standards and foster collaborative working relationships.
• Lead investigations into significant incidents or accidents, providing detailed reports, root cause analyses, and recommendations to prevent recurrence.
• Oversee the development and implementation of risk management policies, procedures, and practices to reduce accidents, incidents, and near misses.
Ideal Candidate:
• A senior leader in Health & Safety with the gravitas to influence senior stakeholders and be part of the Senior Management Team (SMT).
• A background in logistics is beneficial, with awareness of issues related to trucks and relevant H&S concerns.
