Job responsibilities
We are seeking an experienced and compassionate Pre-Operative Nurse to join our team on a weekend shift basis. The role involves providing pre-operative assessments and care for patients scheduled for surgery, excluding orthopaedics, ensuring that they are fully prepared for their procedure. The nurse will be responsible for assessing the medical and psychological readiness of patients, educating them about their upcoming surgery, and coordinating with the surgical team.
Key Responsibilities:
* Conduct thorough pre-operative assessments for 8-10 patients per day across various specialties (excluding orthopaedics).
* Review patient medical histories, medications, and relevant health conditions to identify any potential risks.
* Perform physical assessments, including vital signs and lab work, and ensure the patient's medical records are up-to-date.
* Educate patients about the surgical process, potential risks, and post-operative care instructions.
* Provide emotional support and address any patient concerns related to their surgery.
* Coordinate with surgeons, anaesthetists, and other healthcare professionals to ensure that patients are fully prepared for their procedure.
* Ensure patient consent is obtained and documented appropriately.
* Maintain a clean, organized, and safe environment in the pre-operative area.
* Keep accurate, confidential patient records and documentation.
* Manage patient flow to ensure timely assessments and readiness for surgery.
Person Specification
Qualifications
* Registered Nurse with valid NMC (Nursing and Midwifery Council) registration.
* Previous experience in a pre-operative nursing role is preferred.
* Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to put patients at ease.
* Strong organisational skills and the ability to work independently.
* Ability to work efficiently and effectively in a fast-paced environment.
* A compassionate and patient-focused approach to care.
