Ethical Trade & Human Rights Manager

Princes Liverpool is looking for an Ethical Trade & Human Rights Manager to join our team within our prestigious Liverpool office located in the Royal Liver Building.
About the position:
You will work closely and effectively with all members of the Corporate Relations team, including the Sustainable Sourcing Manager, Responsible Sourcing Assistant, and the Corporate Relations Director. Our approach is to embed sustainability into multiple functions, so the role requires an individual with strong communication and influencing skills, and the ability to inspire and motivate.
The role requires substantial internal liaison across many functions within the business - particularly Procurement, HR, Technical, and Sales across our UK, Netherlands, Mauritius, and Italian operations.
Frequent communication with customers, NGOs, and industry experts will also be required; therefore, the ability to form strong relationships, speak with authority and confidence while being ready to listen and learn is essential. The job holder will be required to represent the company publicly on ethical trade matters and will support external communications and media management with the CR Director and retained Public Relations agencies.
Key Responsibilities:
* Leading our human rights and ethical trade strategy development, overseeing implementation of the strategy using existing processes, systems, and tools, and identifying improvement areas to meet future needs.
* Leading on ethical and human rights reporting on progress and key milestones.
* Working with Head of Sustainability and CR Director on internal/external sustainability and related ESG communications for multiple audiences.
* Horizon scanning and ensuring our strategy meets current and future needs.
* Preparation for and leading specific ESG Human rights meetings; ensuring all relevant actions are adequate, robust, and performing to plan; participating in other subject-specific ESG workstreams.
* Ensuring all investment into human rights initiatives are within budget and deliver a tangible benefit to our business.
* To play a leading role in the short and long-term development and implementation of Princes' ethical sourcing strategy, policy, procedures, systems, tools, manuals, and communication throughout the business.
* Review and propose updates and continuous improvement to the current ethical work stream flows and responsibilities.
* Monitor supplier performance via SEDEX reporting, internal Ethical Risk Assessments as well as information obtained from Buying and Technical teams.
* Identifying emerging areas of ethical risk within our supply chain and ensuring corrective action plans are implemented by suppliers in a timely manner to meet operational targets.
* Ongoing mapping of supply chains and human rights risk in a regional and sectorial context.
* Develop the profile of Princes' ethical trade internally and in our supply chain, for example through training programmes, induction processes, corporate materials, and capacity building.
* Establish and maintain strong collaborative working relationships with internal teams, external suppliers, and stakeholders such as the Ethical Trading Initiative, SEDEX Stakeholders Forum, and Food Network for Ethical Trade, representing Princes effectively.
* Lead on Human Rights Impact Assessments in identifying subject area, developing a proposal, and implementing one per annum.
* To build strong relationships with the ethical trading personnel at our major customers and ensure Princes' positive position is clearly and regularly communicated.
* Chairing quarterly ESG Human Rights workstream, ensuring the workstream and outputs are on track with applicable targets or key objectives.
* Chairing monthly Ethical Steering Group meetings and highlighting and prioritising any information or escalation issues to ESG members.
* To provide advice and guidance and increase awareness of ethical matters internally and externally, answer queries and provide support for required media or customer statements. Also to contribute as required to internal and external ESG-related reports, particularly the ETI annual report and lead on the development of our annual Modern Slavery Statement.
* Ensuring that Ethical Trading activities are managed within the CR Department budget effectively.
Experience Needed:
* Degree level qualification.
* Advanced knowledge of the SEDEX platform is essential.
* Experience in the application of ethical trade principles and best practices in an FMCG environment.
* In-depth knowledge of ethical trade and human rights salient issues with the ability to engage with key stakeholders on these.
* Excellent influencing skills and ability to work as part of a cross-functional team, interacting with and advising senior personnel including executives of the business.
* Strong understanding of commerciality, influence, and risk.
* Ability to take a proactive approach and set a strategic, realistic direction for supply chain management.
* Ability to set KPIs and analyse data in order to set targets and strategy.
* Excellent communication, organisational, planning, and presenting skills, with great attention to detail.
* The ability to build strong relationships internally and externally and adapt management style to different audiences.
* Training or experience in ethical auditing and the clear ability to understand, interpret and analyse ethical audits.
* High personal level of interest in ethical trading and human rights within a corporate context.
