The Norwich Bioscience Institutes Partnership (NBIP) has an exciting opportunity for a highly motivated HSEQ advisor acting as Dangerous Goods Safety Advisor (DGSA) to join their busy team. HSEQ team supports the John Innes Centre, Earlham Institute, Quadram Institute, The Sainsbury Laboratory and the NBIP teams.
The main duties of the role will include providing health and safety support to the Institutes and NBI Partnership by reviewing and updating health and safety documentation, providing advice and guidance on general health and safety matters, providing H&S related training, and responding to emergency incidents.
Key Relationships
The position will report to the Head of HSEQ and will work closely with other HSEQ team members, EI, JIC, TSL and QIB Lab Managers, and NBIP Facilities team to contribute to the delivery of a first-class health and safety on site and ensure the compliance of the dangerous goods shipped.
Main Activities & Responsibilities
1. Provide general Health and Safety support and training to the workers from the Institutes and the Partnership. 20%
2. Prepare and update Health and Safety documentation and upload on HSEQ management system such as risk assessments and safe working procedures. 20%
3. Provide a service and competent advice, guidance and support for packaging and transport of dangerous goods for the Institutes and Partnership operations. This includes preparing and updating documentation related to Dangerous Goods shipment. 20%
4. Manage the development and delivery of a dangerous goods training programme for all staff and students involved in dangerous goods transport. 10%
5. Investigate incidents, accidents, near misses including dangerous goods shipment incidents, and provide high standard report. Monitoring and supporting with the implementation of remedial measures where appropriate. 10%
6. Participate in audits and inspections. 5%
7. Respond to emergency incidents when required. 5%
8. Contribute to safety improvement projects on site, including supporting the Head of HSEQ in relation to the Next Generation Infrastructure (NGI) project when required. 5%
9. Provide quarterly and yearly reports to QIB and EI, JIC and TSL Health and Safety committees. 5%
10. As agreed with the line manager, any other duties commensurate with the nature of the post.

The NBI Partnership provides non-scientific services to the John Innes Centre (JIC), Quadram Institute Bioscience (QIB), Earlham Institute (EI) and The Sainsbury Laboratory (TSL). The role:

Their key responsibilities will also be to manage compliance of international carriage of dangerous goods by road, and air, develop policies and procedures, to manage development and delivering dangerous goods training programme and support reception and purchasing teams with shipment. The successful candidate must have experience of working in research institutes or universities supporting dangerous goods shipment. They will also have a good knowledge and experience of working safely with hazardous materials in laboratory environments and providing general H&S support.
The ideal candidate:
The successful candidate will have experience of working in research institutes or universities supporting dangerous goods shipment. They will have an IOSH Managing Safely qualification and either hold or be willing to obtain a Dangerous Goods Safety Advisor qualification.
The candidate should have ability to prepare and review risk assessments, method statements and standard operating procedures. The candidate will have good knowledge and experience of working safely with hazardous materials in laboratory environments and experience in conducting workplace inspections and checks.
The successful candidate must be self-motivated with the ability to work well in a team by promoting and encouraging a healthy and safe working environment in line with legislation and best practice.
Additional information:
Salary on appointment will be within the range £36,000 to £39,750 per annum depending on qualifications and experience. This is a full-time post on an indefinite basis.
