About the Role
We are seeking an experienced Network Engineer to support and enhance MOD's critical Defence Network infrastructure. This role involves providing comprehensive network engineering support across various MOD projects, including planning, design, implementation, and maintenance of secure network solutions. The successful candidate will ensure network operations meet MOD security standards (JSP 440 & JSP 604), provide expert-level support to MOD stakeholders, and manage complex network environments across multiple security domains.
The position is hybrid, requiring approximately two days per week at MOD Corsham. Candidates must hold DV clearance and be sole UK nationals.
Key Responsibilities
* Design, implement, and maintain complex network solutions including LAN/WAN, routing, switching, firewall configurations, and VPN technologies.
* Provide network engineering support, addressing performance issues, conducting troubleshooting, and swiftly implementing corrective actions.
* Ensure network security compliance, aligning with MOD security policies (JSP 440 & JSP 604), accreditation standards, and best practices.
* Develop and maintain detailed network documentation, such as technical diagrams, network configurations, and operational procedures.
* Act as a technical representative during Service Management Meetings and Security Working Groups, offering guidance on network security, reliability, and efficiency.
* Coordinate with internal teams and external vendors, managing changes, upgrades, and enhancements to MOD’s secure networks.
* Support MOD accreditation activities, ensuring network modifications and new deployments fully meet security and compliance standards.
Essential Experience & Skills
* Significant experience designing, implementing, and maintaining secure network infrastructure in MOD or Defence environments.
* Comprehensive knowledge of core networking protocols and technologies including TCP/IP, OSPF, BGP, MPLS, VLAN, and VPN (IPSec).
* Expertise in configuring and troubleshooting network devices from leading vendors (Cisco, Juniper, Palo Alto, Fortinet).
* Proven track record managing complex networks in classified CIS environments, including MOD-specific accreditation and security requirements.
* Strong understanding of cryptographic security, encryption methods, and secure network architecture principles.
* Excellent communication and stakeholder engagement skills, with the ability to clearly document technical processes and network configurations.
Desirable Skills
* Experience working directly within Defence Digital, ISS, or similar MOD IT teams.
* Experience automating network management processes and operational tasks to enhance efficiency and reduce manual overhead.
* Familiarity with MOD-deployed operations, including experience providing network support in deployed or tactical environments.
* Certifications from relevant vendors such as Cisco (CCNA/CCNP), Juniper (JNCIA/JNCIS), or equivalent professional qualifications.
Security & Nationality Requirements
Due to the sensitive nature of this role, only sole UK nationals are eligible. Candidates must hold active DV Clearance prior to commencing the role.
