We are seeking a Senior Research Associate to examine the representation of orographic flows in numerical model simulations using an array of new observations over the European Alps coming from a major international field campaign. You will work with a numerical weather prediction model to test parameterization schemes for orographic flows and the atmospheric boundary layer, and evaluate how their representation impacts weather systems.
You will be a key researcher within an exciting new project, Orographic Flow Representation in the Alps at Multiple scales (OFRAM), part of the international TEAMx programme (see https://www.teamx-programme.org). The four TEAMxUK projects are collaborating on both observational and modelling activities, using the same numerical modelling framework and some common simulations, ensuring good support and efficient use of model resources. TEAMxUK is also making a significant contribution to the international field campaign via an array of ground-based instrumentation and a major aircraft-based contribution using the FAAM (https://www.faam.ac.uk). You will contribute to the TEAMx field work during the summer extended observational period in July 2025 and will work with a variety of observational data sets (aircraft, lidar, radar, station, etc).
You will join a vibrant group of researchers and post-graduate students at UEA working on climate processes and with expertise in the Met Office’s Unified Model and in analysing observations. You will work closely with the project team and others in the TEAMx programme – nationally and internationally.
You will be expected to produce systematically generated suites of model experiments and analyse their output. You will also present your scientific results at national and international conferences and write them up for journal publications in collaboration with others in the project team. You must have a PhD (or equivalent experience) in Meteorology, Physics, or a related subject awarded or to be awarded within six months of appointment.
This full-time post is available from 1 May 2025 on a fixed term basis for 30 months.
