We are looking for experienced Mental Health Nurses with sound knowledge and skills to join our Staff Nurses on Brooker Ward, which is a 22-bedded unit for people suffering from dementia and mental illness. You will work as part of the team to ensure the effective care and treatment of our Older Person Mental Health acute admission ward at St James' Hospital in Portsmouth.
You need to be motivated and an enthusiastic practitioner with a passion for older persons' mental health. You will play an important role in the team as we aspire to provide excellent care to our patients and develop our service in line with national and local guidance.
You will be a positive role model, coach, and mentor for junior colleagues and students, providing supervision and engagement. Main Duties of the Job
1. Assess patients/clients, plan, develop, implement, evaluate programmes of care, and carry out nursing procedures.
2. Provide direct nursing care for patients/clients to achieve the best health outcomes.
3. Ensure the use of nursing knowledge and skills to assess, plan, implement, and evaluate patients/clients/family health needs, as well as actively promote health and wellbeing.
4. Evaluate clinical outcomes and report variance to clinical pathway, protocols, or best practice guidelines.
5. Contribute to effective discharge planning and/or referral processes to health care providers and support agencies to meet identified health needs.
6. Apply diagnostic reasoning and professional judgement to nursing practice issues/decisions.
7. Manage care of patients/clients on a day-to-day basis and, when required, manage care of all patients/clients in the absence of senior colleagues.

Person Specification
Qualifications
* BSc Nursing or RN currently registered with NMC
* Practice assessor/supervisor
* Teaching Qualification, e.g. ENB 998 or equivalent
Experience
* Experienced in developing care plans
* Experienced in developing and delivering care and clinical interventions to patients
* Experience of MDT working
* Experience of teaching, training and/or supervision
* Evidence of recent CPD
* Evidence of developing policy, guidelines contributing to management of resources
Additional Criteria
* Clinically competent at Band 5 level.
* Excellent communication skills, written and verbal.
* Ability to prioritise workload and work autonomously, instruct and direct others; work is managed, not supervised.
* Able to deal with frequent emotional or distressing circumstances.
* Ability to work in unpleasant working conditions, i.e., bodily fluids.
* Teaching, supervision and assessing skills.
* Dexterity required for intravenous and intramuscular injections, inserting catheters, setting up syringe drivers, removal of sutures, wound management.
* Using judgement when evaluating patients' condition/progress.
* Ability to work as part of a team and support development of others.
* Ability to adapt to changes in the work situation.
* Understanding of the health needs of people in their care and health promotion.
* Understanding of a range of clinical approaches.
* Awareness of research and evidence-based practice relevant to clinical area.
* Articulate and knowledgeable of current professional nursing issues.
* Be able to demonstrate an understanding of the principles of equality, diversity, and inclusion and how they apply to staff and patients in a healthcare setting. Able to demonstrate personal commitment to challenging discrimination and promoting equalities, at an appropriate level for the post.
* The role requires Enhanced DBS.
* The role requires the post holder to sign up to the Automatic Renewal DBS service.
* Is able to work legally in the UK.
* Is able to work with children and vulnerable adults.
* Ability to travel for meetings across a range of sites in Southampton/Portsmouth/Hampshire as required for role.
* For posts which require a professional registration, postholders hold a valid up-to-date registration with their professional body.
* For posts where postholders are required to drive as part of their role, they hold a valid full driving licence which enables them to drive in the UK.

£29,970 to £36,483 a year. Please note, for part-time hours the salary will be pro rata.
