Our Healthcare Assistants are key to us achieving this, so we are looking for an individual who is confident, enthusiastic, with great communication skills to join our existing group of healthcare assistants.
Our Healthcare Assistants deliver and assist the practice in the provision of treatment, preventative care, health promotion and patient education, whilst working under direct supervision and strictly in accordance with specific practice guidelines and protocols.
Main duties of the job
Communicate effectively with patients and colleagues to promote better patient care and outcomes.
Carry out both face-to-face and telephone consultations with patients including taking patient observations such as blood pressure and pulse readings.
Maintain a high level of infection control.
Offer support and signpost patients to make healthier lifestyle choices.
Escalate any concerns to the relevant clinician where appropriate.
Job responsibilities
The post holder is a healthcare assistant, who acts within their professional boundaries, supporting and working alongside a team of healthcare professionals in general practice to meet the needs of our patients. The role will be supported by and work under the indirect supervision of the Clinical Nurse Manager and will undertake tasks and duties delegated by the Clinical Nurse Manager or a suitably qualified regulated professional.
Key Duties and Responsibilities:
1. Measuring and recording patient biometrics in routine presentations and annual medical checks such as:
* Blood Pressure
* Pulse Rate and Rhythm
* Temperature
* Height and weight - Body Mass Index
* Taking patient blood samples - phlebotomy
* Carrying out ECG's
* Carrying out Spirometry / Feno testing, following accredited training
* Immunisations and B12 injections after receiving adequate training and a period of supervision
1. Use appropriate infection control procedures and maintain work areas in each clinical room so that they are clean, safe and free from hazards reporting any potential risks identified, including:
* Handwashing
* Universal hygiene procedures
* Collection and handling of laboratory specimens
* Segregation and disposal of waste materials
* Decontamination of instruments and clinical equipment
* Reporting and treatment of sharps injuries
* Dealing with blood and body fluid spillages
* Assist patients and colleagues in adopting sound infection control measures
2. Understand and apply the principles of the cold chain - Ensure safe storage, rotation and disposal of vaccines and drugs within area of responsibility
3. Know the general principles of first aid and resuscitation to be able to undertake initial actions as appropriate
4. Follow and deliver care in line with all company policies and procedures
5. Be aware of and, if appropriate, assist in current clinical audits
6. Ensure own actions are consistent with clinical governance systems and practice in accordance with agreed standards of care
7. Ensure stock items under your control are ordered and available in the treatment and consulting rooms
8. Be able to manage your own time effectively
9. Respect the privacy, dignity, needs and beliefs of patients and carers
10. Understand basic legal and communication issues regarding child abuse, family violence, vulnerable adults, substance abuse and addictive behaviour
11. Act as a chaperone
12. Urinalysis and preparation of specimens for investigation by the pathology laboratories
13. Home visits as required
14. Prepare and maintain environments and equipment before, during and after patient care interventions
15. Use personal security systems within the workplace according to practice guidelines
16. Identify the risks involved in work activities and undertake them in a way that manages the risks
17. Assist in raising awareness of health and well-being, and how it can be promoted
18. Give accurate and appropriate information to patients and groups within own competence
19. Record information and activities undertaken with patients and carers in an accurate and timely fashion using manual or computer systems as appropriate
20. Maintain confidentiality of information relating to patients, relatives, staff and the practice
21. Take the necessary precautions when transmitting information
22. Actively work toward developing and maintaining effective working relationships within and outside the practice
23. Participate in the administrative and professional responsibilities of the practice team
24. Ensure that patients are referred to the appropriate healthcare professional for the appropriate level of care within an appropriate period of time e.g. pathology results, common/minor ailments, acute conditions, long-term conditions reviews etc.
25. Work with colleagues in the team on the development of current and new services and other initiatives
26. To support public health campaigns, providing specialist knowledge on all public health programmes available to the general public

* Experience working in a patient-facing environment
* Experience of working in primary care / general practice
* Experience on the clinical System: Systmone
Qualifications
* Qualified to NVQ level 2 in Health and Social Care or equivalent
* Qualified to NVQ level 3 in Health and Social Care or equivalent
