Locum Band 6 Speech and Language Therapist - Stroke Rehabilitation Unit

We are seeking a dedicated and experienced Locum Band 6 Speech and Language Therapist to work on the Stroke Rehabilitation Unit based at the Community Hospital in Redruth, Cornwall. This role involves working closely with individuals who have experienced a stroke, providing specialist therapy and support to aid their recovery and enhance their communication and swallowing abilities. You will work within a multidisciplinary team to ensure holistic care and optimal outcomes for stroke patients.
Key Responsibilities
* Assess and manage individuals with speech, language, and swallowing difficulties following a stroke.
* Develop and implement individualized treatment plans based on comprehensive assessments of patients’ needs.
* Provide therapy for communication disorders (aphasia, dysarthria, apraxia) and swallowing difficulties (dysphagia).
* Work alongside other professionals, including physiotherapists, occupational therapists, and doctors, to deliver integrated care for stroke patients.
* Support patients and their families with education and advice on managing speech, language, and swallowing issues.
* Regularly review and monitor patient progress, adjusting care plans as required.
* Document patient progress and therapy outcomes in accordance with trust policies and guidelines.
* Participate in multidisciplinary team meetings, case reviews, and provide clinical supervision when necessary.
* Promote a positive environment for patients, encouraging recovery and improving quality of life.
* Contribute to audits, service improvements, and staff training as required.
Requirements:
* HCPC Registered Speech and Language Therapist.
* Proven experience in assessing and treating individuals with speech, language, and swallowing difficulties, particularly in a stroke rehabilitation setting.
* Knowledge of evidence-based therapy techniques for stroke patients, including dysphagia and communication therapy.
* Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work effectively within a multidisciplinary team.
* Excellent organizational and time-management skills.
* Experience in creating and delivering personalized care plans.
* Enhanced DBS clearance (or willingness to obtain one).
* Ability to work autonomously, with supervision and support as needed.
* Experience of working in a stroke rehabilitation unit or neurological setting.
* Post-graduate qualifications or specialist training in dysphagia or stroke rehabilitation.
* Evidence of continuous professional development (CPD).
