Lead Surgical Practitioner - Practice Plus Group Plymouth
Full-time 37.5 hrs per week
Practice Plus is now hiring for a Lead Surgical Practitioner in our Plymouth hospital.

Practice Plus Group Hospital Plymouth has a CQC Good rating and provides excellent healthcare to the population of Plymouth and the south west region, including Cornwall, Isles of Scilly, and all of Devon. We are an elective surgical centre providing arthroplasty surgery, orthopaedics, general surgery, endoscopy, and cataract surgery.
The clinical services include Outpatients, Day Surgery Unit, Inpatient Ward, Theatres, Endoscopy suite, Radiography, Physiotherapy, and Pharmacy, with care provided by a multidisciplinary team.
About the Role:
To contribute to the general management of the unit in support of the Theatre Manager and Deputy Theatre Manager. To deputise as required to maintain responsibility for the management of patient care within the department and demonstrate an advanced level of clinical skill.
To be responsible for the management of the surgical specialty team, including equipment, instrumentation, and standards within the department.
To be involved in the assessment of care needs, the development, implementation, and evaluation of programmes of care, and teach those skills to other members of the multi-disciplinary team.
Coordinate team members and the department to meet the care needs of patients. Maintain a safe working environment for staff and patients in the operating theatre suite.
To be competent in all aspects of clinical practice within the specified role in the Operating Department.
What you'll be doing
Key Responsibilities
The role has management, clinical, teaching, and staff development responsibilities:
Management and leadership
* Day to day responsibility for ensuring an efficient, effective, and safe day case service is delivered, ensuring effective communication in all aspects of performance.
* Demonstrate advanced leadership skills and the ability to delegate and assess staff performance and be able to carry out appraisals and set objectives. Be actively involved in the induction of new staff.
* Train staff and carry out regular updates for all procedures.
* To be responsible for the management and effective use of personnel and surgical consumables within the department to provide an efficient surgical service.
* Work in conjunction with the Theatre Manager and Deputy Theatre Manager to develop the theatre service, looking to develop new and more efficient ways of working, getting the best use of the theatre resource.
* Respond to patient feedback by reviewing processes and pathways.
* To work closely with the unit team to ensure the outpatient assessment supports the delivery of patient care and efficient use of theatre time.
* To lead, motivate staff, develop and encourage harmonious working relationships and professional rapport within the department, with other disciplines and departments.
* Ensure Consultant specific kit lists are up-to-date and accurate.
* To participate in the risk management strategy and ensure that all Health and Safety and COSHH requirements are met.
* Participate in maintaining standards of infection control principles.
* To ensure all accidents and incidents are reported via Datix and to the Theatre Manager/Deputy Theatre Manager and participate in investigation as required.
* To ensure that stock levels and consignment are managed appropriately and fall within agreed budget targets.
* Ensure staff work to high standards, local policy and procedures, and national guidelines.
* To ensure all equipment and instrumentation are maintained and in good working order.
* Review instrument needs and be involved in business motivation for instruments and equipment.
Clinical and professional role
* To demonstrate advanced clinical skills and the ability to plan daily assignments within the theatre team and prioritise patient care.
* Professional knowledge kept up to date and disseminated to the team.
* To recognise the importance of a Multidisciplinary Team approach to patient care and coordinate care delivery acknowledging individual personal contributions.
* To act as a resource person for others in the planning of care; ensuring practice is evidence-based and supports and develops new ways of working.
* Demonstrate a working knowledge of standards of practice and relevant policy and procedure, showing competence in all aspects of theatre technique and procedures and be able to disseminate to junior staff.
* Liaise with relevant consultants to plan forthcoming surgery requirements.
* To run theatre lists both efficiently and competently following policies and procedures; utilising resources within the department effectively to deliver quality care at all times.
* To ensure that equipment is handled correctly and maintained in safe working order, reporting any defects to the Theatre Manager/Deputy Theatre Manager.
* To supervise the work of junior and unqualified colleagues; sharing personal expertise and specialist knowledge with other clinical colleagues.
* To be responsible for maintaining accurate, timely, and complete records, ensuring the safety and confidentiality of information.
* To take responsibility for personal and professional development. To be responsible for attending mandatory training sessions and to ensure that all policies and procedures are adhered to.
* Develop/review competency documents for surgical roles.
* To take an active role in the Clinical Governance strategy.
* To support the development and implementation of high-quality care protocols to provide a highly effective fast track service for all cases specialising in day care.
* To participate in clinical audit, KPI monitoring, and collection of data as required.
* Be responsible and implement best practice/team brief checklist/WHO surgical compliance.
Education and professional development
* To keep up-to-date with issues and trends affecting the nursing profession and advances in practice.
* To actively participate in the local orientation/induction programme providing guidance and support and teaching to less experienced or junior staff as appropriate.
* To participate through mentorship in the development of junior staff and identify any professional training needs; be able to act as a mentor to students enabling learning to take place.
* Carry out clinical supervision with team members.
* To adhere at all times to your Professional Code of Conduct, other guidelines, and any other professional bodies and associated guidelines.
* To take responsibility for personal and professional development, to be responsible for attending mandatory training sessions and to ensure that all policies and procedures are adhered to.
* To maintain an enquiring approach to nursing practice.
* Attend specialty meetings as appropriate.
* To plan self-development and personal objectives for discussion at individual performance review.
* Participate in data gathering and audit when indicated.
* To play an active role in the development of the theatre service working in conjunction with the manager and consultants.
* To take part in the ongoing clinical training programmes using best practice models of care.

Qualification:
Essential
* RN Level 1 / RODP
* Teaching/mentoring qualification
* Specialist theatre training e.g. ENB 183/176 or equivalent
Desirable
* Degree or equivalent qualification
* Advanced Scrub Practitioner qualification
