Job Summary
To provide comprehensive, efficient and confidential secretary service to Consultants, medical staff, and their teams. The post holder will work for an extremely busy Consultant and their team, providing support and cover to team members as required. The specialities covered will be Paediatric Ophthalmology.
An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Medical Secretary to join the Ophthalmology department at Northampton General Hospital. We are a very busy and friendly team and are looking to engage an experienced Medical Secretary with sound secretarial and excellent typing and interpersonal skills to take on this busy and varied post.
The successful applicant will become an integral part of an efficient team providing secretarial support to consultants within the Department. A sound knowledge of medical terminology and experience in the use of hospital-based IT systems would be an advantage as well as an understanding of patient pathways. Excellent organisation and diary management skills are essential for this post.
Main Duties of the Job
1. Responsible for prioritising own workload and working independently within service needs.
2. Receive and take relevant action on telephone calls and other enquiries from key contacts, dealing with internal and external sources to resolve any problems, queries or complaints, making appointments and arranging visits and meetings where appropriate.
3. Booking theatre lists and liaising with patients and pre-operative teams.
4. Maintain diaries, assist in scheduling consultant workload and communicate with other relevant parties concerning the planning and re-scheduling of work as necessary.
5. Accurate typing of audio-based dictation as required, ensuring timely dissemination of information.
6. Provide a general administrative service including photocopying, filing, faxing and other office routines.
7. Ensure all investigations and test results are checked by the Consultant or an appropriate member of their team.
8. Participate in audits as required and provide support with training new staff where necessary.

Qualifications
* GCSE English and Maths
* Accurate keyboard skills to RSA 2 or equivalent
