The purpose of the Global Director of Social Impact & Sustainability is to take ownership of and galvanise our business behind our social responsibility and environmental strategy and goals.
This role works directly with and across our senior executive team. Acting as a transformational and integrative leader, this person will work cross-functionally to develop and implement the businesses ESG strategy. This role is critical to being a responsible business, ensuring future business resilience, meeting evolving consumer expectations and delivering to key stakeholder and regulatory requirements. Through our brands, we want to make a difference to the communities we source from and limit our impact on the environment; this role is a key custodian of this promise.
Collaboration is key, working cross-functionally to build stronger plans and programs for the Company and our Partners. An expert leader, with a passion for sustainability at the heart of what they do, this role needs to lead a global team and provide credible subject matter expertise.
The role covers both Twinings and Ovaltine brands and within remit are all aspects of environmental, social and governance practices. While it has a joint reporting line for different aspects of the role, ESG will become part of everyone’s role. The successful candidate will work very closely with our supply teams, finance teams (for reporting), communication and innovation teams. They will also represent the business with key external partners, organisations and bodies and work with the CEO regarding the work we do with the global tea coalition (GTC).
The role will necessitate frequent international travel and will require you to work across international time zones, in particular with internal and external stakeholders in India, China, Kenya, Sri Lanka, Thailand, Argentina, Poland, USA, Switzerland, and France.
Key Responsibilities
Strategic Integration and leadership
* Develop and implement a comprehensive strategy that integrates sustainability and social responsibility into the core business operations and culture, aligned with the Company’s mission and goals.
* Ensure that cross-functional longer-term plans include objectives related to social.
Programme Leadership
* Lead the creation and management of programmes that reduce the organisation's environmental footprint, promote social equity, and enhance community engagement.
* Innovate and drive initiatives that address key environmental and social issues such as climate change and human rights.
* In partnership with Finance and other functions, oversee sustainability reporting and ensure compliance with relevant regulations and standards.
* Manage partnerships with non-profits, community organisations, and other stakeholders to advance social impact initiatives.
Compliance and Reporting
* Ensure compliance with relevant environmental and social regulations and standards.
* Alongside key cross-functional stakeholders, develop metrics and frameworks for measuring impact, tracking, and reporting on the organization’s sustainability performance, ensuring transparency and accountability.
* With key team experts, conduct regular assessments and audits to measure progress and identify areas for improvement.
* Prepare and present annual sustainability reports to stakeholders, highlighting key achievements and future goals.
* When required, work with the Chief Financial Officer to support in the CSRD reporting requirements as a subject matter expert.
Stakeholder Engagement
* Foster collaborative and effective relationships with internal and external stakeholders, including TwO employees, customers, suppliers, community groups, and regulatory bodies.
* Act as a spokesperson and advocate for the organisation’s sustainability and social impact initiatives, enhancing the company's reputation and influence.
* Serve as the company’s representative in sustainability forums, industry groups, and community events.
* Develop and deliver presentations, reports, and communications on sustainability initiatives and achievements.
Innovation and Continuous Improvement
* Drive innovation in sustainability practices, seeking out new technologies, methods, and partnerships that can enhance the organisation’s impact.
* Continuously assess and improve the effectiveness of social and environmental programs.
Leadership and Culture
* Lead and inspire the SI&S team dedicated to social impact and sustainability, fostering a culture of empowerment and commitment to positive change.
* Provide education and training to employees to build awareness and skills related to sustainability and social impact.
* Be an influential role model to the SI&S team, promoting values-aligned behaviours, and driving high performance.
* Provide mentorship, training, and development opportunities to team members.
* Foster a culture of sustainability and social responsibility across the organisation.
Risk Management
* Identify and mitigate risks related to environmental impact, social responsibility, and sustainability.
* Ensure that the organisation’s practices reduce negative impacts and enhance positive contributions.
Skills, Knowledge and Expertise
* Formal qualifications in Environmental Science, Sustainability, or a related field and tea plantations experience would be advantageous.
* Demonstrable experience in sustainability, social impact, or related fields on a global scale.
* Proven capability in dealing with complex global supply chains and experience in a manufacturing setting would be advantageous.
* Experience in HREDD and/or environmental risk mitigation would be advantageous.
* Experience in effective governance practices.
* Proven track record of developing and executing successful sustainability and social impact strategies and programmes. Converting theory and strategy into impactful programs will be crucial.
* Strong understanding of sustainability frameworks, reporting standards, and regulatory requirements.
* Strategic Thinking: Ability to develop and implement long-term reporting project strategies.
* Critical thinking: Ability to analyse and make recommendations balancing risk, trust, growth and cost.
* Leadership: Ability to lead and motivate diverse multi-cultural teams to buy into and support the delivery of organisational and business outcomes.
* Relationship-based: Effective at building relationships and working collaboratively with diverse stakeholders.
* Communication: Excellent written and verbal communication skills. Ability to translate complex ideas and present information clearly.
* Change management: Ability to champion and shift beliefs and behaviours. Comfort with change, managing ambiguity and creating clarity for others.
* Strong project management skills with the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously.
* Passion for social and environmental change and a commitment to making a positive impact.
