Overview
Summary: Performs specific patient care procedures (such as phlebotomy, wound care, gastric and urethral tube insertion and bedside testing) under the direction of a licensed Nurse and/or performs specific support-procedures for the operation of a Nursing or Clinical Department. Operates patient monitoring systems.

Qualifications
Other information: High school or equivalent plus specialized, short-term training in medical/surgical patient care or the delivery of special care. One to three years experience preferred. Receives on-the-job training and competency verification to perform primary functions. Completion of a PHS Non-Licensed Assistive Personnel course or similar training required prior to entering classification. Formal medical technician or military training preferred.

Responsibilities
Responsibilities:
1. Monitors patients and collects information for documentation in the patient record.
2. Stamps and assembles patient charts.
3. Posts laboratory and other test results.
4. Transports patients and documents action on patient record.
5. Collects and records vital signs, weights, and other patient data in patient record.
6. Administers oxygen under the direction of a licensed Nurse.
7. Assists nurses and physicians with sterile procedures.
8. Documents all care provided in the appropriate place in the patient record.
9. Removes peripheral, intravenous therapy lines.
10. Performs phlebotomy.
11. Performs wound care and dressing changes.
12. Prepares patients for surgery.
13. Inserts and removes gastric and urethral tubes.
14. Performs enemas and disimpactions.
15. Performs bedside testing such as oximetry, ECG, Glucometery, urinalysis and other tests.
16. Assists with activities of daily living such as feeding, bathing, and walking patients.
17. Operates patient monitoring systems specific to unit needs (such as cardiac and fetal heart monitoring).
18. Participates in the nutritional well-being of the patient through tray delivery and assistance with patient set-up.
19. Uses the computerized Patient Care Information System (PACIS) at the skill level commensurate with the responsibilities included in this description.
20. Ensures cleanliness of nutrition areas and general unit.
21. Cleans and stores equipment.
22. Empties trash, linen bags, and sharps containers.
23. Stocks medical supplies, linens, and paper goods.
24. Inventories equipment as required.
25. Processes broken equipment as directed.
26. Maintains equipment logs as required.
27. Delivers specimens to Laboratory, Microbiology, and Pathology.
28. Transports x-rays, blood, and equipment.
29. Delivers patient food trays and nourishment.
30. Performs basic clerical duties such as answering phones, taking messages, filing, and copying.
31. Assists or provides patient hygiene to include shaving, mouth care, foot care, pericare, and bathing.
32. Assists patients with portable or wall oxygen, and assures proper storage of E cylinders.
33. Organizes care in a manner that contributes to the overall quality of the team.
34. Communicates information pertinent to the end of shift summation before leaving the unit.
35. Performs other functions as required.
