Job Summary
WSP is one of the world's leading professional services firms providing strategic advisory, engineering and design services to clients. WSP UK is currently recruiting an experienced solicitor to support two of its highest growth markets, defence and nuclear.
Within this role you will be responsible for working closely with the defence and nuclear sector teams to support the growth of this business line while managing the legal and regulatory risks associated with this sector. This will include supporting compliance with regulations specific to the defence and nuclear sectors and designing and maintaining a proportionate compliance programme in relation to those sectors. Understanding and advising on defence, nuclear and security (including export control) risk in contracts, training and advising the wider WSP UK legal team and business on managing these risks.
Core Functions
1. Working closely with the defence and nuclear sector teams to support the growth of the business line while embedding a culture of risk management, mitigation and regulatory compliance.
2. Designing and maintaining an export control compliance programme for the UK nuclear and defence sectors.
3. Reviewing and negotiating terms in relation to contracts in the nuclear and defence sectors.
4. Contributing to mitigation plans and project controls for projects with security or export control requirements in the nuclear and defence sectors.
5. Updating the business on legal developments within the nuclear, defence and export control area and delivering focussed training on these areas.
6. Contributing to the organisation and dissemination of legal 'know-how' within the WSP UK Legal team and contributing to the provision of 'lessons learned' feed-back to the wider business.
7. A team player who works collaboratively with colleagues at all times.
8. Expected to familiarise themselves with our health and safety arrangements and guidance relevant to themselves and their activities and shall meet any specific duties for their role as detailed within GNHS020 - Competencies, Roles and Responsibilities.
Qualifications and Work Experience
The successful candidate will be a solicitor qualified in England & Wales, with at least 10 years PQE and significant experience of advising on contracts, managing regulation and risk within the nuclear and defence sectors, including in relation to security and export control requirements. Experience of being in-house at a consultancy services organisation is desirable, but not essential. Experience of Defcons and single source procurement is also desirable.
The successful candidate will have the experience and competence to work autonomously whilst feeding in their knowledge and experience into the wider legal and defence and security teams.
In addition to the above, the successful candidate must also be able to demonstrate:
1. Educated to degree level or equivalent.
2. Qualified solicitor or barrister in England and Wales.
3. Excellent communication skills, written and oral.
4. The ability to work without supervision under pressure and meet deadlines.
5. A proactive approach with the ability to prioritise between competing business demands.
6. Strong inter-personal and collaborative skills.
