Job overview
This is an exciting opportunity to join a close-knit team at our busy, welcoming children’s hospital.
The Alex is the only dedicated children’s hospital on the South East coast, and as such the role provides the chance to work closely with a wide team of peers, providing tertiary care to children and young people up to the age of 17 years old, living in Brighton and Hove, East and West Sussex and East Surrey areas.
This is a full time locum post for a period of 6 months, from February 2025 to August 2025, with the potential option to extend. The post holder will provide day to day surgical care to patients of the Royal Alexandra Children’s Hospital, including participation in a 1 in 6 on call rota, and participation in the outreach clinic/theatre rota.
Main duties of the job
1. To work as part of the consultant, nursing and directorate team to protect and enhance the reputation of the Alex, and to provide the leading paediatric surgery service in the South East Coast region, delivering outpatient, day case and inpatient care at the Alex and with our network partners.
2. To work collaboratively with other specialties, including neonatology, radiology, anaesthetics and paediatrics.
3. To participate in the development of regional solutions to all medical and surgical specialties for children and young people.
4. To work with the Academic Department of Paediatrics and BSMS to establish a respected research programme and presence in national and international peer reviewed journals and meetings.
5. To contribute to undergraduate teaching of medical students at BSMS.
6. To provide high quality postgraduate teaching and experience to doctors, nurses and allied health professionals in training.
7. To ensure our personal and organisational responsibility for safeguarding children and young people is honoured effectively.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
You will join a department of seven existing on call Consultant Paediatric Surgeons, supported by a team of Consultant Paediatric Anaesthetists, Paediatricians, Neonatologists, Radiologists and Pathologists.
The department operates as a regional service, networked with our partner organisations at East Sussex Hospitals, Surrey and Sussex Hospitals, Queen Victoria Hospital and Sussex Community NHS Trusts, including Chailey Clinical Services.
This post will provide day-case and inpatient operating lists and outpatient paediatric surgery clinics.

Experience / Qualifications
* Basic medical degree
* FRCS or appropriate specialist qualification
* Full GMC Registration with a licence to practice
* CCT in Paediatric Surgery or equivalent
* Entry onto the GMC Specialist Register or eligibility for entry within 6 months of the date of the AAC
* Higher Degree
* Teaching qualification
