HCA Support Worker - TIA clinic - Hyper Acute Stroke Unit
Do you want to be a Healthcare Assistant and join one of the best Stroke Units in the UK? Our Stroke Unit has maintained the 'A grade' in the latest Royal College of Physicians' Sentinel Stroke National Audit Programme (SSNAP) audit.
Our stroke service is the designated 24-hour thrombolysis centre for Buckinghamshire and East Berkshire, with 12 hyper-acute beds and 29 acute rehabilitation beds shared between two wards: the Hyper Acute Stroke Unit and the Acute Stroke Unit. We run a high-risk TIA clinic 365 days a year.
With the support of a stroke practice development sister, stroke specialist nurses, and the Trust's education department, we are able to offer a range of education and development opportunities, including in-house training and external courses.
Working across TIA clinic, hyper-acute, acute, and step-down areas, you will have the opportunity to continue to progress your professional development, gain specialist knowledge in the care of acute stroke, and skills in caring for rehabilitation patients.
Please note you will be required to sit a numeracy and literacy test; if you can provide certificate evidence of GCSE level C and above in Maths and English (current grade 4 and above), this will not be necessary.
Main duties of the job
Working as a Healthcare Assistant, you will be part of a busy multi-disciplinary team dedicated to providing individualised, evidence-based stroke care.
Working within the TIA clinic team.
Greet patients in the outpatient department, take bloods, perform ECGs, and record observations. Process electronic referrals. Maintain an Excel spreadsheet. Communicate with patients and other healthcare professionals face-to-face, by email, and on the telephone.
You should be proficient with phlebotomy and obtaining ECGs, have great communication skills, and be experienced in Microsoft Word and Excel.
Working on the hyper-acute and acute stroke wards. Your working day will be varied and will include, but is not limited to, the following:
1. Promote patient comfort and well-being.
2. Communicate with patients who may have speech disturbances due to their stroke.
3. Work within a large stroke multi-disciplinary team where all our staff have an important role.
4. Assist with the admission, transfer, and discharge of patients.
5. Assist patients with personal care, using the correct moving & handling techniques.
6. Assist patients with eating and drinking as advised by the Speech and Language Therapists.
7. Obtain and record patient observations.

Person Specification
EDUCATION, QUALIFICATIONS & TRAINING
* Functional Skills in English and Maths, (Level 1 or equivalent) at interview assessment, or GCSE A to G
* National Care Certificate
* Level 2 or Level 3 in Health and Social Care Subject (or willingness to work towards)
EXPERIENCE
* Understands the nature of the HCSW role and responsibilities
* Previous experience in a healthcare environment
* Evidence of working as a member of a team
* Experience in a customer-focused environment
SKILLS, ABILITIES & KNOWLEDGE
* Ability to communicate in English clearly and concisely with patients, carers, and the multidisciplinary team
* Courteous with patients and others, both internal and external
* Ability to write clearly and legibly in English
* Understands the concept of confidentiality and standards of conduct and care
* Ability to use a computer, with knowledge of basic Excel
* Willingness to undertake the Health and Social Care level 3 apprenticeship
