Teaching Assistant
Location: Brighton
Job Title: Teaching Assistant (Speech and Language & ASC Support)
Hours: Thursday and Friday, 08:30 - 15:30 (Term Time Only)
A specialist communication centre within our school is seeking a Teaching Assistant to support children with speech and language needs alongside Autism Spectrum Condition. In this role, you will work on a 1:1 basis and in small groups with pupils who require help developing their communication skills. You will use a variety of visual aids including now and next boards, PECS, and other tools to enhance language learning, and any experience with phonics is an advantage. The ideal candidate will have clear, demonstrable experience working with children with additional needs in an educational or care setting, and a solid understanding of the challenges faced by children with ASC in their communication development.
Key Responsibilities
* Provide 1:1 and small-group support to pupils with speech and language difficulties and ASC
* Implement language development activities and interventions using visual aids and communication tools
* Use now and next boards, PECS, and other resources to facilitate understanding
* Assist in planning and delivering activities that support speech and language skills
* Monitor and record pupil progress in communication and adjust support strategies accordingly
* Collaborate with teachers and support staff to integrate effective support into classroom routines
Essential Experience/Attributes
* Previous experience working with children that have special educational needs
* Experience working with children with Autism Spectrum Condition and speech and language difficulties
* A DBS check registered on the update service or a willingness to obtain one
* A patient, empathetic and nurturing approach
* Clear communication skills and the ability to work within a team
* The ability to be adaptable, remain calm in challenging situations and respond to the needs of the pupils
* Must be able to understand and follow the school's safeguarding procedures and behavioural policies
* Qualifications relating to education, special educational needs, counselling or psychology are not essential but will be looked upon favourably
