The Lancashire Cardiac Centre is a tertiary cardiac provider for the people of Lancashire & Cumbria. The centre has a well-established invasive and non-invasive services covering a wide range of diagnostic and therapeutic services, these include:
1. Cardiac angiography & intervention
2. Device implants & follow-ups
3. EP simple and complex
4. Echocardiography
All these areas are constantly evolving and developing as new technologies are introduced.
Due to vacancy, an opportunity has arisen to recruit a Band 6 Cardiac Physiologist in the Cardiac Investigations Unit. Candidates should have good experience in cardiology procedures and be willing to progress their career in either Pacing and Electrophysiology or Echocardiography.
We are looking for Physiologists who will relish the challenge of being part of the team that will be taking our department forward into the future. The post holder will possess a BSc in clinical physiology or equivalent and be looking to develop their knowledge and skills.
As a multidisciplinary department, the successful candidate will be expected to work unsupervised in most areas and develop in the field of their specialty. Candidates who may lack experience in some areas will be provided with training plans devised by our training manager to address their training needs.
Main duties of the job
As a Specialist Cardiac Physiologist, you will be required to work autonomously as a competent practitioner within the CIU department. Duties will include specialised cardiac investigations such as diagnostic and interventional cardiology, permanent pacemaker implants & follow-up, and routine non-invasive investigations.
Participation in an out of hours on-call service for emergencies is an obligation for this post.
You will be expected to develop your knowledge & skill into a specialist area of cardiac rhythm management or echocardiography as part of this role.
Job responsibilities
To be technically proficient as an independent practitioner in basic and specialist invasive and non-invasive cardiology procedures, this includes:
1. Diagnostic angiography: Monitor and record cardiac physiological measurements during the procedure. This also includes first line resuscitation with defibrillation or assistance in the insertion of balloon pump and temporary pacing wires.
2. Interventional angiography: i.e., PCI, Stenting, rotablation, PMR, angiojet, intravascular ultrasound, and pressure wire monitor and recording of cardiac physiological measurements for a clinical report. Keeping the physician fully informed of any clinical changes.
3. Permanent pacemaker implantation: Recording accurate lead function tests to guide a secure implantation of cardiac pacing leads. To record and document results, inform appropriate physician of any faults/problems. Support for patient throughout the procedure.
4. Routine implantable device follow-up: Working independently to record accurate lead function tests, making clinical decisions for basic reprogramming of pacemakers depending upon the results of the tests. To document all measurements and inform appropriate physician of any faults/problems.
5. Analysis of 12 lead ECG & ambulatory ECG recordings producing a factual report, which may impact on the clinical management of the patient.
6. Exercise Stress Testing & Cardiopulmonary Exercise services: As lead Cardiac Physiologist (CP), produce a technical report of the accurate recordings obtained of the cardiac electrocardiogram. Good communication is required with the patient to ensure they fully understand the test. Some training of junior medical staff in supervision of exercise stress testing is required.
7. Tilt testing: As lead CP, working alongside doctors and CP, monitor and record cardiac physiological measurements throughout the procedure. Be prepared to respond quickly and appropriately and perform resuscitation when necessary.
8. Participation in the on-call rota for PPCI, Emergency angiography & interventional cardiology, pacemaker implantation & implantable device checks, and other urgent procedures as required.
