Job summary
We are looking to recruit motivated Occupational Therapists to join our general Band 6 rotation at Ashford and St Peter's Hospitals NHS Trust. Applications are welcome from experienced Band 5's as well as those who are looking for a developing role that allows you to progress to a Band 6 role within a 4-6 month period once competencies are achieved. NHS experience is desirable, but applications with similar experience will be considered.
The rotations are 6 months in length and include:
1. ITU and Surgery
2. Emergency services and admission avoidance
3. Medicine and Care of the Elderly
4. Hyper Acute and Acute Stroke
The rotations will offer you the opportunity to work within different settings and with varied MDT professionals allowing you to refine your clinical skills and development of self, and focus more on developing others and your own specialist skills. There is an established formal supervision and appraisal process as well as robust in-house training within each team. The therapies department embraces development of our own staff to progress their career within the department.
ASPH offers a seven-day service across some teams and you will be expected to participate in seven day working as per service requirements. Flexible working requests will be considered.
Main duties of the job
1. Manage a specialist inpatient caseload using clinical skills and reasoning
2. Support junior staff with caseload management and prioritisation on other wards
3. Complete patient assessments in a ward setting, formulate problem lists and provide appropriate therapy input and discharge planning to facilitate a safe discharge
4. Contribute to board rounds, putting patient care and the patient experience first.
5. Communicate with fellow therapists and other MDT members such as nurses, consultants, specialists and support junior staff with decision making
6. Treatment and management of patients requiring post-operative protocols and ensuring that risks are minimised for discharge
7. Actively participate in yours and others' regular supervision and service development, and take personal responsibility in your professional development and professional registration requirements
8. Use initiative, communicate with empathy and be an effective team player.
9. Demonstrate leadership skills and deputise for the team leads whenever necessary
10. Participate in the development of occupational therapists and support staff and students within clinical speciality through training, competencies and supervision
11. Participate in multi-disciplinary team teaching
12. To participate in specific 7 day working rotas, dependent on the team/area

1. To be able to carry out comprehensive assessments and treatment plans for patients including those with complex presentations/ multipathologies.
2. To support junior therapists, assistants and students with their caseload as required.
3. To keep up to date with developments, analysing current research and discussing and implementing changes to your clinical practice.
4. To attend relevant training in order to maintain competencies
Leadership or managerial
1. To be responsible for and actively record your own personal development.
2. To participate in the appraisal as appraisee and appraiser.
3. To supervise junior therapists, students and assistants
Information and reporting
1. To participate in clinical audit and the evaluation of clinical effectiveness
2. To undertake and present relevant evidence based projects.
Service improvement
1. To make recommendations when appropriate to changes in practice leading to improvement in the service.
Communications and Engagement
1. To communicate effectively with all disciplines involved in a patients care, both those from within the organisation and those outside to ensure efficient multidisciplinary working
2. To use a range of verbal and non-verbal communication tools to communicate effectively with patient in order to progress treatment programmes.
3. To maintain accurate records in line with professional body (Royal College of Occupational Therapy), Trust and service standards and policies.
