Job Description
Position: Lifelong Learning Library Adviser - fixed term until 31/10/2025
Location: Saughton Library - Based in HMP Edinburgh
Salary: £25,322 - £27,727 (pro-rata for part time)
Hours: 29 per week
As part of Edinburgh Public Libraries, Saughton Library encompasses aspects of public, legal, and academic libraries. The library is well-supported by the Edinburgh Public Libraries, the Scottish Poetry Library, Fife College, and the Scottish Prison Service. However, it can be a challenging environment as we aim to meet the reading, viewing, and listening needs of individuals ranging from the functionally illiterate to those studying for university degrees.
The library itself is bright, airy, and well-appreciated by the communities we serve, which encompass all categories of prisoners except young offenders, who find themselves in difficult and often stressful situations ranging from weeks to life sentences.
Extra PVG clearance and personal safety training will occur prior to working at Saughton. While the post eventually requires working independently, individuals will be guided throughout the learning process.
This post is regulated work with children and/or protected adults under the Protection of Vulnerable Groups (Scotland) Act 2007. The preferred candidate will be required to join the PVG Scheme or undergo a PVG Scheme update check. Where an individual has spent a continuous period of 3 months or more outside the UK in the last 5 years, an Overseas Criminal Record Check will be required. An unconditional offer of employment and commencement in the post will be subject to the outcome of both these pre-employment checks being deemed satisfactory.
We're committed to creating a workplace culture where all our people feel valued, included, and able to be their best at work. We recognise the benefits that a diverse workforce brings to our organisation.
To improve our organisational culture, we are changing the way we interview and assess candidates by moving from a competency-based interview approach to a behavioural and technical (skills for the job) based approach. This new method will allow us to assess how you think and how you would bring Our Behaviours of Respect, Integrity, and Flexibility into your ways of working.
You can find out more on Our Behaviours web page.
Our salary range typically reflects the initial starting salary and annually increases until it reaches the top of the range.
