Associate Practitioner Biochemistry ( Band 4 )
The post is within the Biochemistry Department at The Royal Derby Hospital site and offers exciting opportunities for learning and development of existing skills.
Associate Practitioners are required to assist the Biomedical Scientist staff. They are required to perform analyses of patient samples using both manual and automated methods, perform analyser maintenance and IQC and package and send away referred work to other hospitals.
Applicants should have 5 GCSEs including English and Maths, A levels or a Science Foundation Degree level (Skill level 3) or NVQ clinical laboratory support level 3. In addition recent Pathology Laboratory experience within the last 12 months is required. You should be enthusiastic and self motivated with good communication, excellent IT skills, planning and organisational skills.
After undergoing a suitable training period, the successful applicants will participate in a shift rota which covers 24hrs, 7 days a week. This is a mandatory requirement due to provision of a robust 24/7service. Decision Making:
• Work on own initiative organising daily workload to achieve departmental test turnaround standards responding to situations that could affect the quality and timeliness of test results and
their reporting.
• Able to prioritise the processing of samples to achieve stated turnaround times and reflect the urgency of the results to the doctor
• Assist senior staff with planning and evaluation of the service.
• Assist with the supervision of trainee BMSs and MLAs within the section.
• Ensure the most cost effective use of equipment and consumables and assist senior staff with stock control.
• To perform technical scientific investigations involving the processing of blood and other body fluids.
• Maintain clinical records in relation to activities carried out, this may involve inputting and/or investigation of test results produced by other staff.
