We are looking forenthusiastic and committedConsultants to join our team of Consultants in the Intensive Care Unit, which is part of the Directorate of Anaesthesia, Theatres and Critical Care. The unit has received the rating of Outstanding by the Care Quality Commission.
These posts have risen following retirement of consultant with responsibilities in Critical Care Medicine and Acute Medicine and service expansion. This is a substantive consultant post.
The successful candidate will join the team of intensive care consultants to cover the Intensive Care Unit and Acute Medicine at the Wexham Park Hospital. This will be afull time ICM Consultant post with additional sessions in Acute Medicine.
We are keen to foster individual interests within Intensive Care Medicine, including researchand quality improvement ambitionsand will encourage continued development within a job planning review and appraisal.
The successful candidate will join the team of intensive care consultants to cover the Intensive Care Unit and Acute Medicine at the Wexham Park Hospital. This will be afull time ICM Consultant post with additional sessions in Acute Medicine.
You will join a team of 10 acute medicine consultants (equating to 6 substantive WTEs) and at a stage where we are looking to expand our service.
The current acute medicine service spans across:
The Acute Medical Unit comprises of a 34 bedded assessment unit (AAU) and 34 bedded medical short stay unit (MSSU).
Emergency Department – decision and management support, post-take reviews.
Ambulatory Emergency Care (AEC)/Same Day Emergency Care (SDEC).
Acute Medicine consultants rotate through ED shifts, AAU, MSSU, and AEC.
Other speciality teams work closely with the acute medicine team with a chest pain in-reach service from cardiology 7 days a week and an acute frailty service supporting referrals directly from the ED and AAU/MSSU. We have a 24-hour primary PCI which have direct access pathways.

The main duties and responsibilities of the consultant in Acute Medicine are:
·To provide a high-quality service (together with consultant colleagues) in Acute Care to the people of Slough and the surrounding areas with appropriate evidence-based guidelines and clinical governance structure.
• To contribute to the multi-disciplinary team working especially on the Acute Medicine Unit to drive flow and enhance efficient acute medical care to patients.
·To liaise with other specialities as required.
·To advise clinical colleagues on matters within their sphere of expertise.
·To offer advice to medical, nursing, managerial and other staff on appropriate matters.
·To carry out medical teaching, examination and accreditation duties as required.
·To participate in the formal appraisal of medical staff in accordance with guidelines from the Royal College of Physicians and the Regional Postgraduate Dean.
·To contribute to postgraduate and continuing medical education activity including Continuing Professional Development.
·To contribute if appropriate to the training of nurses, paramedical, scientific and technical staff.
·To participate in medical audit on a regular basis and to help develop it.
·To provide information as required from time to time for legitimate management purposes, for example to support job planning, service development etc.
·To contribute to the management process within the Trust through participation in planning, project or liaison groups as appropriate. The post holder would be fully involved in specialty and divisional level business meetings.
·To support the Chief of Service and the Associate Director for Acute and Emergency Medicine appropriate advice regarding the development of services.
·To participate fully in mandatory training as required and modified by the Trust from time to time and in annual appraisal, job planning and revalidation procedures The duties are subject to review from time to time in the light of the changing requirements of the service.
The duties will be reflected in the job plan, which will be subject to review at least once a year in conjunction with the Chief of Service. The candidate will be expected to work within the framework of policies and procedures relevant to Medical and Dental staff.
The successful applicant will be expected to take part in developing services within the Trust and to share the clinical, administrative and teaching work with the other consultants in the department. Participation in Clinical Audit is a requirement and an ongoing activity in the Department. Clinical research projects are encouraged.
This is a full time substantive 10 PA consultant post which encompasses 8.5 DCC and 1.5 SPA but any candidate who wishes to work less than full time will be considered and supported, taking into account service needs. Additional sessions may be available on request. The post will be subject to the Terms and Conditions of the new Consultant Contract (2003).
In addition to appraisal, the job plans of all consultants will be reviewed at least annually in conjunction with the Chief of Service and the Associate Director.
