The Opportunity Due to a major project ramping up we have several exciting opportunities for experienced Design Managers to lead major multi discipline projects across a large nuclear defence site. The Design Manager is a key role and will lead the design development for the full design lifecycle and act as the interface between engineering and project teams. The packages of work vary in complexity and may include civils, structural, M&E, systems or marine engineering. The role The purpose of your role as a Design Manager, is to manage the delivery and co-ordinate the technical engineering work packages to required scope, quality, schedule, and cost. This will include planning for and supporting integration with internal project stakeholder groups as well as external customer stakeholder groups. This role has been deemed inside IR35 Duration: 12 months Location: Glasgow - Hybrid Your duties and responsibilities will be Develop, lead, manage and co-ordinate the technical design packages agreeing project related objectives, managing designer performance and making appropriate technical management decisions. Ensure that the design documentation covers the scope of operations required by the Project Manager and is produced to agreed standards, schedule and budget. To plan and implement project design and safety approach which is compatible with Design and Safety Policy/Standards including BIM, based on a sound understanding of business/project arrangements. Ensuring effective Quality Management Arrangements operate and deliver through compliance with the clients Business Management System and Design & Safety Manual. Ensure that the processes and activities being managed are appropriately documented with appropriate records maintained and configuration and quality controls applied. Ensure that staff and contractors are familiar with the hazards and risks associated with the work undertaken by the delegated engineering team through effective management and communication of the Risk Assessment. Ensure design information is articulated to the Safety Lead to enable appropriate justification of the engineering / activities within the Facility Safety Case. Liaise with SDA & DIO Chief Engineers to ensure that Relevant Good Practice is employed.Additional tasks may be specified as required within the overall envelope of provision. Any engagement of this nature will be agreed on a task-by-task basis as part of the role. The role will involve leading and coordinating this interface within the wider JPT. You will have the following qualifications & experience The Design Manager must have 12-15 years’ experience and be able to demonstrate relevant knowledge and skills required in the technical management of large scale and complex design development throughout the design lifecycle. Sound understanding of engineering design and safety practice as relevant to discipline, post and project requirements. Strong understanding and experience of working in BIM environments. Sound project specification, planning, project management and budgeting experience. Sound understanding of Company and departmental procedures relating to Design, Health & Safety (including Principal Designer responsibilities under CDM) and Quality requirements. Working knowledge of relevant engineering office computer applications Experience of the design support to construction, operation, refit/repair of conventional and nuclear submarines and/or facilities. Academic: A degree in an appropriate engineering discipline. Chartered Engineer, registered with Engineering Council.It's great if you also have the following Ideal candidates would already have experience within Nuclear Defence sector or a similar high-risk environment. Familiarity with safety case development techniques e.g., HAZID/HAZOP studies. Experience of working in the UK nuclear industry (energy or defence), particularly in the design and assessment of safety-related structures, systems and components. Knowledge of UK and US nuclear industry regulation and practice, and application of relevant nuclear[1]specific codes and standards.The setting for the role Risks and Hazards are in line with working on a nuclear licenced site. These can include, nuclear fuel, radiation, chemicals and gasses, high voltage equipment, moving vehicles, flammable materials, high pressure circuits, steam, high noise and vibration levels.
