IN SHORT
MK College Group has an exciting opportunity for a creative Maths Lecturer to join the team at HMP Belmarsh. As a Maths Lecturer, you will engage prison-based learners with creative classes and resources. Many learners have diverse needs and learning abilities, often having had negative experiences with education. As a successful Maths Teacher, you will inspire them and provide a positive learning experience.
This role involves outreach work outside the main classroom setting, connecting with learners in a professional manner, supporting them in achieving success through qualifications, and developing confidence and softer skills applicable to employment and further education.
We seek an individual who can communicate well with learners to inspire and motivate them. The average class consists of 8 learners and sessions are approximately 3 hours long. Your lessons must be adaptable, innovative, and imaginative.
MK College will treat all applicants fairly and with respect, irrespective of their background, disability, or any other individual characteristic. We particularly encourage applications from under-represented backgrounds. All offers made to successful candidates are subject to satisfactory outcomes of pre-employment checks, including a Disclosure and Barring Service check (DBS) and security clearance up to Counter Terrorist Check (CTC) level.

Belmarsh is a Category A prison, holding 725 adult male remand and sentenced offenders. It is known for its security and safety. Education staff often feel safer in the prison than in the surrounding area.
The prison benefits from an inspirational governor, and the education department integrates into the full life of the prison, working closely with Healthcare to promote healthy eating and Psychology to promote well-being. Staff are committed to reducing reoffending by preparing offenders for release. Many prisoners face long sentences, making it essential to help them learn and flourish while incarcerated.
Promoting lifelong and Distance Learning is central to Education at Belmarsh. Courses include Art, Business, Catering, Creative Writing, Barbering, English (for native and non-native speakers), IT, Mathematics, and Mentoring. Learning Support is crucial to support a neurodiverse group of learners.
Education delivery hours are Monday to Thursday 0900 – 1200 and 1400 – 1700. Teaching staff are expected to be on-site from 0815 and usually leave by 1715. Fridays are half days with some opportunity for flexible working and working from home. Class sizes typically range from 8 to 12 learners.
Work at Belmarsh may be for you if you:
* believe people can change,
* know we all make mistakes and it is good to learn from them, and
* can accept strict boundaries while being flexible and creative.
The department encourages a diverse workforce and applicants from all parts of the community. Teaching qualifications or experience in enabling learning can be advantageous, but it is also possible to gain teaching qualifications while working at Belmarsh.
The prison is accessible via excellent public transport routes, with secure bicycle storage, shower facilities, and car parking available on-site.
