Background
The Space Environment and Radio Engineering (SERENE) group at the University of Birmingham is seeking a senior leader in the field of space weather to join our team on a part-time, 0.4 FTE basis. This role offers an exciting opportunity to contribute to the strategic growth and leadership of a world-class research group working at the intersection of space weather science, engineering, and policy.
The SERENE group is a vibrant, multidisciplinary team at the forefront of space weather research and engineering. With a strong track record of collaboration with government, defence, and industry partners, SERENE plays a leading role in advancing the understanding and mitigation of space weather impacts on critical technologies.

The successful candidate will play a pivotal role in supporting the head of group in shaping and delivering SERENE’s long-term strategic vision, strengthening our engagement with government partners and other key stakeholders, and advancing the group’s profile in the policy and operational aspects of space weather. The ideal candidate will have:
* A proven track record of senior leadership in the field of space weather research, policy, or operations.
* A strong background in developing and delivering strategic plans in research-intensive environments.
* Demonstrated experience in engaging and working with government stakeholders and funding bodies.
* Internationally recognised expertise in space weather, with a commitment to advancing the field’s policy and operational impact.
* Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to inspire and influence teams and partners.
* A collaborative approach, with experience working across interdisciplinary teams to achieve shared goals.
Main Responsibilities
* Provide senior leadership and contribute to the strategic direction of the SERENE research group.
* Drive activities in space weather policy and operations, influencing research agendas to align with national and international priorities.
* Support the Head of Group in delivering group-wide initiatives and fostering collaboration across multidisciplinary teams.
* Develop and maintain strong relationships with government, industry, and funding bodies, supporting partnerships and advocacy efforts.
* Mentor and advise early-career researchers and PhD students, contributing to their professional development.
* Collaborate on high-impact research and policy-focused projects, ensuring SERENE remains a leader in the space weather community.
* Contribute to funding applications and project development as part of SERENE’s strategic goals.
Person Specification
The post holder will have an outstanding and sustained profile of achievement evidenced by the following:
* PhD or equivalent qualification or an equivalent body of work;
* A substantial record of enterprise, engagement and impact outputs;
* An excellent and widely recognised reputation amongst peers internationally;
* Proven ability to plan and lead the delivery of EEI activities;
* A sustained record of attracting funding for EEI activities, as appropriate to the discipline.
