An exciting opportunity to work for the world’s largest airport in a biodiversity management role helping to maintain the airport’s biodiversity sites. Heathrow airport currently manages over 170ha of off-airport land for the purpose of biodiversity management and for which they have received the Wildlife Trusts Biodiversity Benchmark Award. The management of these sites is overseen by Ecology & Habitat Management (EHM) Ltd who provide services based at the airport. We currently have a vacancy for a Biodiversity Conservation Officer (BCO). Working in close association with the Lead BCO, Biodiversity Manager, as well as EHM Directors and Heathrow Managers, the Biodiversity Conservation Officer will help deliver on site management as well as developing community engagement activities. We currently maintain a number of beehives on behalf of the airport the BCO will be expected to assist with their management, for which training will be provided if necessary. You will be based at Heathrow airport and work closely with the existing Engineering Environmental team as well as local partners and stakeholders. Though this role will be largely field based it is envisaged that there will be an element of office work. There will also be an opportunity to assist on wider EHM ecology projects including Phase I habitat surveys, protected species surveys and Biodiversity Net Gain assessments. The successful applicant will be self-motivated and able to integrate into a professional team as well as work on their own under minimal supervision. You should have a passion for conservation management and for engaging people in biodiversity management training and development will be offered for the right people to grow. The role has many opportunities to develop further within the broader ecological sector. Key Activities You will be responsible for helping to manage the off-airport biodiversity sites as well as working with the wider biodiversity/ environment team at Heathrow Airport to develop community engagement activities and promote the biodiversity management at Heathrow. This will be a varied and dynamic role which will suit a self-motivated person with a passion for hands-on biodiversity management. Key activities are likely to include, though not limited to. Help develop and implement site Biodiversity Action Plans Conduct necessary inspections of water courses and compile reports. Conduct on site management, e.g.CoppicingInvasive species controlPlanting SeedingAquatic vegetation controlSupervise and check on grazing animals.Scrub/ bramble control.Assist with Ecological monitoring. Conduct site safety inspection reporting any defaults. Engage with members of public using the sites. Conduct litter picking. Prepare relevant reports and compile information for presentation. Develop and implement community engagement activities. Help promote Heathrow’s biodiversity management. Represent Heathrow at local partnership organisations. Assist with beekeeping activities.
