The Financial Lead – Strategic Growth, will play a critical role in driving the financial and commercial success of Thalia Waste Management.
This 12-month secondment will provide support on two high profile bids in Derby and Milton Keynes and on enhancing commercial value on existing contracts, particularly with Cambridgeshire County Council and a possible forthcoming QCiL. They will be involved in creating and managing detailed financial models that underpin the bids, establishing robust pricing structures, and ensuring the cost basis of the bids and DoV are both competitive and profitable.
The role will also support the development of other opportunities, including Waterbeach 2.0, and contribute to the review and optimisation of payment mechanisms, performance metrics, and KPIs. Additionally, the role will involve guiding complex opportunities through Thalia’s business development and governance processes, ensuring innovative and bid-winning propositions that enhance the company’s market presence.
As the financial lead throughout the bidding process and any negotiations relating to a QCiL on Cambridgeshire, this individual will offer strategic insight and data-driven recommendations that influence key decisions. They will collaborate with cross-functional teams to ensure financial strategies are fully integrated with operational, legal, and commercial considerations. The role also involves leading commercial related negotiations, representing Thalia’s financial interests, and providing critical input on contract terms to secure agreements aligned with the company’s strategic objectives.
Responsibilities
Bid Management
1. Develop and manage detailed financial models for both the Derby and Milton Keynes bids, ensuring accuracy and alignment with bid objectives.
2. Lead the financial evaluation of bids, providing insights into pricing structures and cost implications.
3. Collaborate with cross-functional teams to ensure financial considerations are integrated into bid strategies.
Support for Development Opportunities
1. Provide financial expertise for other development opportunities, including Waterbeach 2.0 and the Cambridgeshire QCiL.
2. Support the review and optimisation of payment mechanisms, performance metrics, and KPIs for strategic projects.
3. Build and maintain comprehensive pricing models, including cost bases and financial risk assessments.
4. Provide scenario analysis and sensitivity testing to support decision-making during the bidding process.
5. Monitor and report on the financial viability and competitiveness of proposed solutions.
Commercial Negotiation
1. Act as the financial lead in commercial discussions and negotiations, ensuring robust financial representation.
2. Advise on financial implications of contract terms and conditions.
Stakeholder Engagement
1. Work closely with the Head of Origination & Risk to align financial strategies with broader commercial objectives.
2. Liaise with internal stakeholders and external partners to gather inputs and refine financial projections.
Governance & Compliance
1. Ensure all financial models adhere to company policies, compliance standards, and relevant legislative frameworks.
2. Support governance processes, including approvals and documentation for bidding milestones.
Strategic Growth
1. Drive the delivery of complex opportunities through the business development and governance process, ensuring innovative and competitive propositions that enhance Thalia’s market presence.
Person Requirements
Qualifications
1. Degree in Finance, Economics, Business, or a related discipline.
2. Professional qualifications (e.g., CIMA, ACA, ACCA) are highly desirable.
Skills
1. Advanced financial modelling and analytical skills.
2. Strong negotiation and influencing capabilities.
3. Proficient in Excel, financial software, and tools.
4. Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
Experience
1. Proven track record in financial modelling for complex projects or bids.
2. Expertise in developing payment mechanisms, performance metrics, and KPIs.
3. Experience in commercial negotiations, ideally in infrastructure, waste management, or similar sectors.
4. Knowledge of public procurement processes and competitive dialogue.
5. Action-oriented and results-driven.
6. Strong attention to detail and commitment to accuracy.
7. Collaborative with a continuous improvement mindset.
8. Ability to thrive under tight deadlines and manage multiple priorities.
