Job Overview As a key member of the Clinical Nurse Specialist team, you will be responsible for managing the ongoing care of vascular patients across both inpatient and outpatient settings. Your role will involve: Coordinating and delivering care to vascular patients. Conducting pre-assessments for endovascular patients. Leading and managing nurse-led outpatient services. Supporting, advising, and educating ward staff to ensure high standards of patient care. This is a dynamic and patient-focused role that requires clinical expertise, strong communication skills, and a commitment to professional development within the vascular specialty. Main duties of the job Develop and maintain clinical competence in the field of vascular surgery, ensuring up-to-date knowledge of best practices and emerging treatments. Participate in vascular ward rounds, contributing actively to patient care discussions, discharge planning, and ensuring continuity of care. Develop and apply specialist skills and knowledge in the management of patients with arterial disease, implementing clinical protocols aligned with service developments. Provide accurate, evidence-based information and resources to patients and their families regarding vascular disease, treatment options, and post-procedure care. Offer expert clinical advice and guidance to ward nurses, clinic nurses, Tissue Viability Nurses (TVT), community nurses, GPs, and other healthcare professionals on vascular care management. Conduct pre-operative reviews of vascular patients, coordinating their post-operative care in collaboration with the wider Multi-Disciplinary Team (MDT). Attend and support nurse-led vascular outpatient clinics, including off-site clinics, assisting with patient reviews and follow-ups. Attend the Diabetic Foot Clinic, contributing to the assessment, planning, and implementation of treatment decisions made within the MDT. Demonstrate competence in the application of 4-layer compression bandaging and the use of appropriate wound care dressings. Ensure the Trust’s compliance with national vascular quality standards, including the Vascular Quality Improvement Programme (VQIP), Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm (AAA) screening, and Amputation programme. Support the AAA telephone follow-up service. Assist with maintaining and updating the vascular database (including NVR), analyzing data to monitor trends, and presenting monthly reports. Support the implementation of the Small Aneurysm Clinic. Undertake nurse-led ultrasound scanning following appropriate training and upon achieving competency. Review vascular inpatients independently, escalating concerns and discussing cases with consultants or the Senior Vascular Nurse Specialist as necessary. Perform Doppler assessments, interpret results, and seek senior clinical input when indicated. Communication & Collaboration Liaise effectively with the multidisciplinary team, including consultants, surgeons, radiologists, and allied health professionals. Participate in ward rounds and multidisciplinary team meetings to ensure continuity of care for vascular patients. Provide clear and accurate documentation in patient records, ensuring timely updates on patient progress. Service Development & Quality Improvement Contribute to the ongoing development of the vascular nursing service, identifying areas for improvement and implementing changes as required. Participate in audits, data collection, and service evaluations to support quality improvement initiatives. Ensure compliance with clinical governance and health and safety standards. Professional Development Maintain up-to-date knowledge of developments within vascular nursing and endovascular procedures.
