Building opportunities
Join our board to help us develop more affordable homes for people in housing need
We’re looking for someone experienced in RSH compliance and preferably with knowledge of the RP application process to join our board. This is a great opportunity to help us take a step up in fulfilling our aim of developing community-led, sustainable homes for affordable rents in Somerset, BANES & North Somerset.
We currently manage one block of flats, two commercial units, and have two developments in the pipeline for 30+ affordable homes for rent. We will be applying to become a Registered Provider of Social Housing.
Living or working in Somerset, BANES, or North Somerset would be an advantage but not essential.
Role
As a board member, you will join a small team of fellow directors with a broad range of housing expertise and experience. You will be expected to attend Board meetings (every two months) and the Governance Committee meetings - all online. As a board member, your role is to ensure we are governed properly and follow good practice. You will need to be able to review reports in advance of meetings, as well as assisting with and helping to oversee the RP application process.
You will be joining us at an exciting time that is not without its challenges.
We have no employees at present but are supported by a co-operative development agency that undertakes most of our administrative and operational tasks.
What we are looking for:
You will need to be suitably experienced or knowledgeable of RSH compliance issues and processes and be able to play an active part in ensuring we follow governance good practice and guide us into the next phase of our mission.
Essential:
* Ability to spare 4-8 hours per month
* Ability to use your experience and knowledge to make considered judgments
* Ability to work as part of a team
* RSH compliance experience
One or more of the following would be beneficial but not essential:
* RP application process experience
* Lived experience in social housing or deprived communities
* Lived experience and a background from an under-represented community
We can offer you:
* The chance to be part of a Community Land Trust, at an exciting time in its development, and to have a big impact on its plans and operations. Board members are essential to ensuring that we remain strong and able to navigate the challenges ahead.
* The opportunity to be at the vanguard of community-led housing across Somerset and make a real impact on addressing housing need in the communities we serve.
* A range of expenses including child/dependant care, travel, home office allowance, and IT support.
* The opportunity to gain experience as a director of a growing and ambitious community land trust/housing provider.
Impact
As part of our board, you will support and shape our work and strategic direction, as well as help us achieve our core purpose of providing more community-led housing for people in housing need.
You will play a vital role in helping us become a Registered Provider and realize our ambitions of addressing housing need in towns across Somerset, BANES, and North Somerset.
Your experience and skills will be key to ensuring we meet the regulatory challenges, follow good practice, and build opportunities for people in housing need.
With a step-up from the current 4 rented homes to 37 with the two developments in the pipeline, and a largely new board in place, this is a watershed moment for the Community Land Trust; your impact will be immediate and profound.
Application
When applying, please provide a CV and a cover letter detailing why you are interested in this role, your relevant experience, and what you can offer the Community Land Trust.
There is no formal interview. Applicants will have the opportunity for an initial informal chat before being invited to a board meeting.
