Phyllis Tuckwell provides supportive and end of life care for people living with an advanced or terminal illness. Based in Farnham, Camberley and Guildford, we serve a population of 550,000 across West Surrey and North East Hampshire.

Phyllis Tuckwell is looking to appoint a weekend specialty doctor to take part in the out of hours on-site support of the hospice inpatient unit. This substantive post comprises of approximately 6-8 hours per Saturday and Sunday on-site working and telephone support for the remainder of the shift (8am-7pm). The appointee will be reviewing hospice inpatients and admitting new patients to the ward. There is always the support of the consultant in palliative medicine.
Main duties of the job
This post would suit a doctor wishing to increase their Palliative Medicine knowledge such as a GP. Prior experience of palliative medicine is desirable but not essential. The successful applicant will receive a comprehensive induction and be supported educationally.

Job Title: On call/weekend working Specialty doctor in Palliative Medicine
Salary Range: £28.37 per hour.
Base: Kings Lodge, Phyllis Tuckwell Hospice
Accountable to: Medical Director
This is a substantive post comprising of approximately 6-8 hours per Saturday and Sunday on-site working and telephone support for the remainder of the shift (8am-7pm). The frequency is approximately 1 in 5 to 1 in 8 weekends. There is no regular scheduled work Monday to Friday in this post.
The appointee will be expected to provide medical input to the hospice inpatients, admit new patients to the ward on each day of the weekend duty.
The Specialty doctor will be professionally accountable to the Medical Director and ultimately to the Trustees of Phyllis Tuckwell (PT).
The Specialty doctor will be expected:
* To clerk patients on admission to the IPU assessing and documenting patients' physical, psychological, social, and spiritual needs and devising a treatment plan.
* To review selected patients during ward rounds, and change the treatment plans as needed, in collaboration with the nursing team and consultant on call, to provide good quality palliative care.
* To keep accurate records that are individual, timely, and identifiable, using the hospice electronic record system.
* To reassess the patients' problems as necessary.
* To refer deceased patients to the Medical Examiner or coroner, complete the medical certificate of cause of death as needed.
* To be familiar with, and to adhere to, PT policies and guidelines.
* Complete an appraisal and engage with continuing professional education relevant to Palliative Medicine sufficient to maintain fitness to practice. Funding for study leave will be made available.

Ability, Knowledge, Clinical, Practical and IT Skills
* Sound knowledge of basic science and ability to apply this to clinical practice.
* Clinical knowledge relevant to palliative care: Capacity to apply sound clinical knowledge relevant to the job including: symptom control, demonstrable skills in communication around end of life care, understanding of ethical issues relevant to palliative care, etc.
* Clinical judgement: Experience in making clinical decisions and managing risk. Knows when to seek help, able to prioritise clinical need.
* Show aptitude for practical skills required in the job. E.g. venepuncture, catheterisation.
* Good IT literacy and a willingness to learn use of new applications related to the post.

Qualifications
* MB BS or equivalent medical qualification.

Experience
* At least 2 years post-graduate experience in relevant specialities.
* Previous palliative care experience post-registration.
Fitness to Practise & Health
* Applicants' knowledge is up to date and is fit to practise safely.
* Current licence to practice held with the GMC.
* Meets professional health requirements (in line with GMC standards in Good Medical Practice).
