The Tree Surgeon’s duties include undertaking the maintenance and removal of trees to ensure their health, safety and attractiveness using full safety and climbing equipment, plus chainsaws, chippers etc., maintaining tools and equipment, and ensuring hazard-free work areas.
You should be able to work with all crew members, including our mechanised arb team, assisting with operations such as sectional dismantling, felling, clearing brash and ensuring safe working practices around the machinery. This team utilises a range of machinery, an excavator equipped with a grapple saw and tree shear for efficient felling and processing of larger trees, a biomass chipper for converting brash and timber into woodchip and tractors for site access and material movement. This role also involves forestry hand cutting, roadside works, and work on large private estates, requiring a diverse range of skills and adaptability.
Responsibilities:
• To carry out tree surgery and tree felling operations to a high standard.
• Undertake aerial rescue safely and efficiently and to administer first aid if necessary.
• Understand and carry out verbal and written instructions
• Operate machinery including chainsaws, chippers, stump grinders and access equipment
• Ensure all sites are kept clean and free of hazards
• Inspect equipment and tools and perform repairs and maintenance when required and undertake daily/weekly safety checks and maintenance operations
• Safely and correctly operate machinery/tools using the appropriate Personal Protective Equipment and observe health and safety protocols
• Report any issues or safety hazards to the Arb Manager and Team Leader or other relevant parties
• Adhere to company Health, Safety and environmental regulations at all times
• Perform forestry hand cutting, using chainsaws to fell and process trees in a woodland environment. This requires knowledge of safe felling techniques, timber stacking, and environmental considerations.
• Undertake roadside works, adhering to specific safety regulations and traffic management procedures. This may involve working in close proximity to traffic and requires a high level of awareness.
• Carry out tree care and maintenance on large private estates, demonstrating a professional and courteous approach to clients and maintaining the aesthetic value of the properties.
Requirements:
Essential
• Previous work experience as a Tree Surgeon/Climber or similar (minimum 3 years)
• Good physical strength, fitness, vision, and hearing.
• A positive attitude
• NPTC Chainsaw Maintenance and Cross Cutting (CS30/31) or LANTRA equivalent
• Felling & Processing Trees up to 380mm (CS32)
• Access a Tree using a Rope and Harness & Aerial Tree Rescue (CS38)
• Aerial Cutting of Trees with a Chainsaw using Free-Fall Techniques (CS39)
• Knowledge of roadside working practices and traffic management procedures.
• A full UK driving licence
Desirable
• Experience working safely around and alongside heavy machinery, such as tractors, excavators and biomass chippers
• Experience in forestry hand cutting and safe felling techniques.
