Senior Electrical Engineer

Ocean Optics is looking to strengthen the team that will propel solutions across multiple categories. We draw from disciplines including systems, optics, mechanical, electrical, software, data science, and industrial design.
This position will be based in Rochester, NY with typical in-office working hours of 8am-5pm M-F. At Ocean, we value your work-life balance. This position reports to the Software and Electrical Engineering Manager.
As a Senior Electrical Engineer, you will:
* Work with a team of driven, supportive, and highly skilled professionals in the development of Ocean Optics’ next-generation electrical architectures for spectroscopic and imaging systems.
* Utilize electrical engineering expertise in a multidisciplinary team to design, build, and test new solutions to meet customer requirements and specifications for spectral sensing applications, integrating spectrometers with light sources, motion control systems, and other components.
* Mentor junior engineers in professional growth and understanding of electrical systems.
* Investigate, propose, and build consensus for future technology solutions and design architectures.
* Lead the effort to improve configuration management from prototype to production release.
About The Candidate
Our ideal candidate brings a wealth of experience and abilities, and should possess the following:
Experience
* 8-12 years of work experience in driving technical solutions in manufacturing and industrial environments.
* Hands-on experience developing tightly integrated hardware/firmware systems from concept through volume production.
* Expert knowledge of electronics in the digital domain, including design, layout, simulation, test, and verification.
* Experience in board design with communication protocols such as I2C, SPI.
* Experience in component selection and sourcing.
* Strong understanding and applied knowledge in Altium Designer eCAD including:
o Schematic capture.
o Layout (place and route) up to 8 layers.
o Experience in impedance-matching and high-speed signal routing.
o Experience with Altium 365.
* Strong understanding of design concepts that will succeed during CE/UL testing.
* Ability to perform hands-on board assembly/repair/testing/debug.
* Strong understanding of cable design best practices, documentation, and build.
* Experience working with multidisciplinary teams (especially mechanical designers and software developers) with an ability to anticipate their needs/wants during development.
* Good interpersonal skills, innovation, and the ability to motivate, inspire, and influence cross-group/functional teams with a high degree of independence and success.
* An entrepreneurial spirit and mindset, bringing a natural curiosity for what “can be” and the willingness to challenge boundaries.
* Ability to deal with ambiguity, navigate uncertain situations, and drive for clarity.
* High standard of ethics and integrity.
* A good communicator and self-starter, capable of working independently and solving problems without constant oversight.
* Experience and drive to plan and implement team design process improvements.
* Methodical approach to configuration management.
* Excellent skills in planning and communications, strong analytical capabilities, and attention to detail.
* Capable of estimating and developing their scope of work.
* Ability to travel domestically and internationally.
* Ability to occasionally lift up to 45lbs.
* Other responsibilities as assigned.
Nice-To-Have:
* Experience with firmware development in C.
* Experience with analog design.
* Experience with FPGA development using VHDL.
* MATLAB and/or Python programming experience.
* Rapid prototyping and/or 3D printing experience.

Compensation
The pay range for this position is $90,000 - $115,000 per year; however, the base pay offered may vary depending on geographic region, internal equity, job-related knowledge, skills, and experience.
