The post holder will join UCL Biological Services as an Animal Technician, a proactive member of the Biological Services team in a multi-species facility with responsibility for overseeing breeding programs, husbandry, monitoring and maintenance of experimental animals. Duties and responsibilities include:
1. General animal husbandry and maintenance of transgenic/immunocompromised mouse breeding programmes and species housed within the facility.
2. Taking delivery of diet/bedding and consumables and the distribution of supplies within the unit.
3. General room/lab/theatre cleaning and cage washing.
4. To assist in the preparation for individual experiments including relevant documentation.
5. Set up and maintain laboratory/theatre equipment and consumables.
6. Keeping an up to date working knowledge of project licences, including severity conditions, adverse effects and humane end points.
7. Help identify and propose improvements to experimental procedures advising on practical opportunities to implement the 3R’s.
8. Maintain up to date computer entry of stock, breeding and study data and costings.
About you
Things you'll need for this job include:
1. Good knowledge of the Animals Scientific Procedures Act and EU Directive.
2. Willingness to present or deliver training in workshops.
3. A commitment to the highest standards of animal husbandry and welfare.
4. Ability to work on own initiative as well as part of a team.
5. To be self-motivated with the ability to remain calm under pressure and cope well with changing priorities.
