Brampton's Chemistry Department
The Chemistry department at Brampton has developed an excellent record of achievement at A level, with many students achieving A* and A grades. For example, in 2024 40% of Chemistry students achieved A*- A, and 66% A*- B.
Currently, the Chemistry department consists of a Head of Department and two further members of staff. The successful applicant will become the fourth member of the department. In total there are eight teachers in the College’s Science Department, which is well served with four purpose-built, well-equipped laboratories and a full-time technician.
The department offers A level Chemistry (OCR) and IGCSE Chemistry. The A level is taught both as a one year and a two year course and there are currently three A2 classes, three AS classes and two intensive A level classes which are taught in one year. GCSE Chemistry is taught as a one-year course and there a currently two small groups. Class sizes at Brampton are small, with no more than ten students per group. The teaching in the A level classes in the department is shared between two teachers.
The department actively promotes student enrichment, including organising field trips and contributing to the weekly Medical Forum.
The department has also developed a range of support materials, including course notes and question packs, tailored to the specific demands of the courses taught. Tutorial help for individual students is also a key part of the department’s success.
