About the Role Bromsgrove District Council and Redditch Borough Council operate a joint fleet of nearly 200 vehicles providing waste collection, street cleansing, grounds maintenance, and housing repairs services to nearly 80,000 households, operating out of two depots for the two areas. The Council has two depots, one in Redditch (B98 7SN) and one in Bromsgrove ( B60 3EX ). Our team are looking for a qualified and experienced HGV Mechanic to work primarily based out of our Redditch Depot, but with flexibility to work across both depots if required to support services. The Depot Workshops provide a repair and maintenance service for the Councils internal fleet across Environmental Services and Housing, which includes a diverse range of HGVs, light vehicles and road-going plant. The successful candidate will work as part of a team to deliver an extensive Programme of vehicle maintenance, repair, inspection and examination. They will work to ensure compliance with statutory legislation, the legal requirements of the Councils Operators Licence, DVSA requirements and internal Council policies and procedures. To provide support to all the Council Services, we operate an alternating weekly shift rota of early and late shifts to cover the hours of 6.30am - 6pm at each depot (1 week early shift, 1 week late shift). About You The ideal candidate will have: City & Guilds Level 3 qualification in Heavy Motor Vehicle Engineering, or equivalent Qualified to VOSA standards for HGV inspections and tests Qualified MOT Nominated Tester class 4,5,7 to support the full time MOT retail and Taxi Nominated Tester. Experience of conducting maintenance, inspection, repair and test services for a diverse fleet including vehicles such as light vehicle van/Tipper's, Small Plant machines, Sweepers, Waste Tankers, and Large Refuse Vehicles. Experience of performing MIG welding; gas and electric welding. (Preferably a coded welder, but not essential). Experience of hydraulic and pneumatic diagnosis/repair Possess a full LGV Class 2 Category C Licence Ability to work on own initiative and to meet strict deadlines Key Responsibilities: Repair of Specialist Vehicles: Conduct chassis and equipment fault diagnoses, and execute any necessary body and chassis repairs. Standards Compliance Ensure repairs meet VOSA Standards. MOT Preparation: Precision preparation for MOT inspections. Efficient Completion: Timely completion of jobs, addressing additional tasks. Paperwork Management: Complete relevant paperwork and input data into DE systems. Job Management: On-the-Go Work: Execute tasks at either depot, and support off site breakdowns with adaptability. Customer Communication: Professionally communicate, exceeding expectations. Housekeeping Excellence: Maintain good housekeeping practices. Continuous Improvement: Undertake training for skill enhancement. Quality & Customer Satisfaction: Compliance Focus: Ensure vehicles are fit for purpose Quality Maintenance: Uphold quality within your skill set, seeking assistance when needed. Customer Care Excellence: Provide the best possible customer service. Record Keeping: Complete and return all required records and documents. Health and Safety : Safety Responsibility: Prioritise personal Health and Safety at all times Follow and support the development of risk assessments where necessary, and ensure safe practices. Hazards Reporting: Highlight and report potential hazards. Knowledge & Experience: Commercial Vehicle Expertise: Proficient in commercial vehicle repair and servicing. Tech-Savvy: Familiar with Fleet Management or Workshop IT systems and vehicle technology. Compliance Awareness: Understands compliance and associated Health & Safety requirements. Seasoned Professional: Previous experience in a similar role. Specialised Maintenance: Experienced in the maintenance and repair of RCVs or similar vehicles.
