About the Department: The Church Commissioners manage historic assets of the Church of England, with recent research revealing links to transatlantic chattel enslavement. This role supports further research and engagement in this area.
About Lambeth Palace Library: Established in 1610, it is the principal repository for the archives of the National Church Institutions, housing collections from the 9th century to the present, accessible for public research.
Responsibilities:
1. Participate in outreach and engagement activities supporting research into historic links to transatlantic chattel enslavement.
2. Review and catalog archives using specialist software, and upload records to online catalogues.
3. Respond to research inquiries, supervise the Reading Room, and assist researchers and church entities.
4. Engage in professional development to enhance collections knowledge.
5. Ensure the security and proper use of collections.
6. Contribute to wider team projects and the Library's initiatives.
All staff share responsibility for safeguarding children and vulnerable adults, with appropriate training and actions.
Candidate Profile:
* Diverse IT skills, including Microsoft Office.
* Strong communication skills.
* Interest in historical collections, especially related to global histories.
* Ability to handle complex and sensitive historical material with confidence and sensitivity.
Knowledge & Experience:
* Understanding of African chattel enslavement history.
* Experience in research and archival cataloging.
* Experience in heritage promotion and outreach activities.
