We are looking to appoint a dynamic, self-driven research midwife to join a well-established successful Innovation, Research and Development department.
Candidates should be registered midwives with substantial post-registration experience. A minimum of 18 months post-registration experience is preferred for the smooth transition into this post.
The role includes but is not limited to:
1. Delivering commercial and academic clinical trials across Northumbria Healthcare NHS Trust, working with a team of professionals with a wide range of responsibilities.
2. Possessing excellent communication skills with the ability to manage and prioritise allocated workload.
3. Having knowledge in research design methods and understanding of analytical processes (desirable).
4. Being a team player with the competence to work independently across the trust, establishing networks of communication across teams and support services.
5. Conducting a variety of clinical trials necessitating a high level of organisational skills including detailed high-quality data in accordance with Good Clinical Practice (GCP).
6. Engaging in competency-based assessments to become an experienced, autonomously practicing research midwife.
Main duties of the job
With supervision, the candidate will be able to:
1. Support trial/study set up, ensuring the smooth planning and running of clinical trials in accordance with ICH GCP, standard operating procedures, clinical trials protocols, and Trust policies.
2. Recruit patients to both commercially and academically sponsored clinical trials within the trust and monitor those patients during the trial.
3. Provide accurate data management and reporting of safety findings in accordance with GCP, Health Research Authority (HRA), Research Ethics Committee (REC), and Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) standards.
4. Maintain excellent communication and interpersonal skills and manage accurate and comprehensive records of data derived from the research studies.
5. Safeguard the wellbeing of the patients in accordance with ICH Good Clinical Practice Guidelines for Research.
6. Establish good lines of communication with local specialty teams and support services and external research teams within the Research Delivery Network and external stakeholders (commercial/industry partners).
7. Conduct all research-related training to ensure the delivery of high-quality safe research.
8. Exhibit excellent time management skills and the ability to manage and prioritise allocated workload.
9. Possess keyboard and general IT experience to support data management.
10. Work towards achieving all relevant research midwife competencies within 12-24 months.

Job responsibilities
With supervision, the candidate will be able to:
1. Assess, plan, implement, and evaluate care working as a member of the research team.
2. Demonstrate proficiency in basic laboratory skills and manage laboratory samples, including processing complex blood samples (training provided).
3. Work alongside medical and non-medical staff, attending MDT, investigator meetings, and other research events on and off site.

5. Provide safe and accountable management of investigational medicinal products (IMPs).

Person Specification
Qualifications
1. RGM with significant experience.
2. Previous research experience.
3. Knowledge of NMC code of conduct.
4. Mentorship qualification (or must be gained within 12 months of appointment).
5. ENB998 Teaching and Assessing in clinical practice or equivalent.
6. Evidence of qualification to undertake the supervision, teaching, and assessing of students (essential requirement for post, expectation this will be completed within an 18 month period).
7. Evidence of continuing professional development.
8. Highly developed midwifery skills required for examining and assessing patients, and taking samples, including palpation and speculum examination of mothers.
9. Highly developed midwifery skills required for examining and assessing neonates.
Experience & Knowledge
1. Experience in large randomised clinical trials.
2. Experience in running concurrent trials.
3. Knowledge of research design, methods, and understanding of the analytical process.
4. Knowledge of midwifery investigations and conditions.
5. Knowledge of ICH GCP guidelines.
Personal Attributes
1. Knowledge of or experience in coaching and mentoring practices and tools.
