British Antarctic Survey (BAS) is looking for an exceptional electronics engineer to join our Engineering and Technology team. BAS delivers and enables world-leading interdisciplinary research in the Polar Regions. We employ experts from many different professions to carry out our Science as well as keep the lights on, feed the research and support teams and keep everyone safe!

You’ll be joining our Engineering and Technology team in Cambridge, with a period of training lasting approximately 6 months before deploying to Rothera Research Station, living and working in Antarctica for the duration of the contract.
You’ll help us to deliver high quality scientific datasets for academic research, by operating and maintaining scientific instrumentation. You will also be responsible for Rothera’s various communication platforms to communicate with the outside world. This role includes working as part of a team on a rota performing meteorological observations and includes aircraft control tower support work. There will be periods of time where the engineer would be expected to fly and camp at remote field sites to install and maintain scientific experiments in the interior of Antarctica. The work is incredibly varied and interesting. You would be expected to work with different teams of people to support a common objective that requires both good interpersonal skills and self-reliance.
Within the role, there will be an opportunity to develop as a field engineer. There is a particular focus on autonomous systems, renewable power systems, radio communications, HF/VHF radar, passive receivers and optical sensing technologies.
Some of your main responsibilities will include:
* Maintaining the satellite communications links to the outside world
* Maintaining and operating the HF and VHF radio systems and navigation aids for aircraft
* Maintaining field party communications systems
* 24-7 support of automatic atmospheric research instrumentation
* Field servicing of extremely remote experiments in the interior of Antarctica
* Communicating regularly with line management describing progress, problems and plans
* Document processes and procedures
* Undertaking meteorological observations on a rota
* Supporting flight following duties in the control tower on a rota
For the role of Electronics Engineer, we are looking for somebody who:
* Has a relevant HNC or higher
* Has broad electronic experience
* Is competent at briefing others on duties
* Can demonstrate ability to problem solve on a wide range of issues and to think clearly under pressure
