Job overview
There is an exciting opportunity for a dynamic and enthusiastic Physiotherapist with a special interest in the care of older adults to join our team as the Clinical Lead across the Health and Ageing wards as well as the King's Older Persons Assessment Unit at King's College Hospital. This is a full time post based at the Denmark Hill site and requires some weekend working.
Main duties of the job
The post holder will ensure a high quality, effective and efficient physiotherapy service for the Health and Ageing wards as well as the King's Older Persons Assessment Unit.
They will manage and supervise the Band 7 Team Lead(s) through structured appraisals, meetings and peer support. They will use their expert physiotherapy knowledge and advanced clinical reasoning to manage their own highly complex clinical caseload as well as supporting and developing other members of the team and wider service.
They will be part of the Physiotherapy Clinical Leadership team and will contribute to the planning and service development of therapy services within King's. As Clinical Lead, they will be expected to present at appropriate internal and external forums and to deputise for the Head/ Deputy Head of Physiotherapy as required.
The successful post holder will work as part of the multidisciplinary team, driving forwards and promoting the role of Physiotherapy in the care of older adults.

Main Duties and Responsibilities
Clinical and Professional
* Be the clinical expert in the team, taking overall responsibility for the efficient, effective and safe management of patients referred to the team.
* Work at an advanced level assessing, diagnosing and treating complex and diverse patients using advanced clinical reasoning.
* Prioritise work efficiently taking into account clinical and service priorities.
* Be professionally and legally responsible and accountable for all aspects of both your own work, and that of the team.
* Use outcome measures to evaluate physiotherapy interventions and ensure treatment programmes are progressing appropriately.
* Use advanced theoretical and practical knowledge to advise, guide and teach staff in their assessment and management of patients.
* Keep abreast of new techniques in relation to the management of the patients in this speciality particularly in line with any national guidance e.g. NICE guidelines for Falls/ Multimorbidity.
* Ensure patient views are incorporated into service planning.
* Lead on production of clinical guidelines and local policies ensuring they are evidence-based and appropriately implemented and audited.
* Provide expert guidance and advice to other professions and bodies involved in the provision of older adult rehabilitation services.
* Be an active and competent member of the on-call, weekend duty rotas, and cover of statutory and public holidays, including working as lone physiotherapy practitioner at night.
Communication
* Be able to persuade and motivate patients through effective communication skills.
* Provide patients, families and other carers with expert advice or instruction to promote the understanding of the aims of physiotherapy and to ensure consistent patient management.
* Provide and receive information from patients, carers and other professionals regarding a patient's condition and treatment progress.
* Communicate effectively with patients and carers to maximise rehabilitation potential and to improve understanding of the condition.
* Develop and maintain close working relationships with other members of the team, ensuring appropriate attendance at ward rounds, multi-disciplinary meetings and case conferences including organisation of the latter.
* Develop and maintain close working relationships with physiotherapy colleagues, referring clinicians and other appropriate professions and agencies in the provision of rehabilitation services.
* Be integral in discharge planning including liaison with staff in referring hospitals or community staff, to which patients are discharged for further rehabilitation, providing timely discharge reports.

Information Management
* Maintain comprehensive and accurate patient notes.

Physical Resources
* Ensure regular inspection and ensure reporting of defects of equipment used in this area and comply with Health and Safety requirements.
* Ensure new equipment on trial is safety checked and audited for local effectiveness.
* Be aware of the cost/benefit implications in the selection of appropriate equipment to be provided for patient long-term use as an individual and by the teams.
Service Development
* Lead on the development of departmental policies and procedures for older adult rehabilitation.
* Lead on the development of team objectives in line with Trust and Therapy objectives.
* Work collaboratively with all Physiotherapy Clinical Leads and Heads of service, on joint projects.
* Initiate and implement changes to working practices related to research findings or service initiatives.
* Undertake clinical audits.
* Take a lead role in Clinical Governance, and have an active role in clinical effectiveness within the department, to ensure clinical quality, implementation of evidence based practice and safe working practices.
* Identify and advise the Head and Deputy Head of Physiotherapy of actual or potential changes in service requirements or delivery and provide suggestions on management of the changes.
Education and Training
* Be responsible for the allocation, training and professional development of under- and post-graduate students.
* Ensure staff have sufficient opportunities to extend their knowledge and skills by attendance at appropriate post-registration courses of both clinical and managerial content.
* Ensure well-structured rotations for Band 5 and 6s.
* Prepare and participate in lectures, seminars and demonstrations to other physiotherapists, student physiotherapists and other disciplines as appropriate.
* Ensure planned in service training for the team is appropriate.
* Foster, encourage and facilitate the development of evidence-based projects and guide through to publication.
* Train, assess and deem competent, staff undertaking high risk procedures such as therapy handling.
* Be responsible for maintaining own competency to practice through CPD activities, using reflective practice and maintain a portfolio that indicates personal development, working towards a post-graduate qualification e.g. MSc.
People Management and Performance
* Deputise for the Head of Physiotherapy.
* Manage the team of physiotherapy staff, on the Health and Ageing wards and in the Kings Older Persons Assessment Unit (KOPAU).
* Delegate relevant internal management and administrative duties to clinical staff thus facilitating enhancement of staff skills and understanding of the practice of management.
* Facilitate effective team working in the physiotherapy department, leading, assisting and supporting other team members.
* Appraise and develop senior staff and to fulfil the King's appraisal system requirements.
* Support, including teaching and clinical supervision, for off-site staff.
* Provide emotional support for team in situations of patient bereavement, physical or verbal aggression or other stresses of work including adverse incidents.

* BSc or MSc in Physiotherapy

Essential criteria
* Physiotherapy experience in the care of older adults at a senior level
* Specialist knowledge and understanding in a broad range of conditions and problems associated with older adults such as but not limited to multimorbidity, frailty, balance disorders, Dementia and cognitive impairment with examples
* Awareness of a variety of advanced rehabilitation techniques and demonstrates understanding of complex relationship between physical, cognitive, psychological and social dimensions of illness.
* Experience of supervising and managing staff and students
* Quality improvement/ service development/ research experience with examples
