About the Role
As an Autism Teaching Assistant (TA), you will play a pivotal role in supporting students with ASD by implementing individual learning strategies, assisting with communication and managing sensory needs. You will work closely with teachers, SENCOs and therapists to ensure that every child receives tailored support that fosters both academic and personal growth.
Responsibilities of the Autism Teaching Assistant (TA):
1. Provide one-to-one and small-group support for students with Autism.
2. Assist in the development and implementation of individual learning plans (IEPs).
3. Support communication development, including the use of PECS, Makaton and AAC systems.
4. Help students with sensory regulation by using appropriate strategies and interventions.
5. Encourage independence and confidence in learning and social interactions.
6. Work collaboratively with teachers and therapists to adapt lessons and activities to suit individual needs.
7. Foster a calm, structured and supportive learning environment.
8. Monitor student progress, providing detailed feedback to teaching staff and SENCOs.
9. Uphold safeguarding policies and ensure the safety and well-being of all students.
The successful candidate will have:
1. Previous experience supporting children or young people with Autism (ASD), sensory processing difficulties, or communication needs.
2. A relevant qualification in education, SEND, or child development (e.g., CACHE Level 2/3, Psychology Degree, Speech and Language Therapy).
3. Knowledge of ASD strategies, including TEACCH, visual schedules and social stories (training can be provided).
4. Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to build positive relationships with students.
5. A patient, empathetic and adaptable approach to supporting children with autism.
6. Have an updated CV (covering the last ten years barring any unexplained gaps) and an enhanced DBS registered to the update service (or be willing to apply for one).
