A vacancy has arisen for a Port Multi-skilled Operative to join the team based in Felixstowe. Reporting to the General Manager. The role involves covering a variety of engineering and operational duties. Previous experience of freight train operations will be a distinct advantage but full training will be given to the right applicant. The successful applicant will be utilised as required to assist with the busy train plan over the two rail terminals at Felixstowe.
Responsibilities:

The post involves shift work and rostered Saturday working. However flexibility in hours and duties will be vital to the success of the role.
Principal Activities
When directed by management complete the following activities in a timely and efficient manner:
Where competent and required undertake daily operator checks of all gantry cranes, mobile lifting equipment and other mobile plant and ancillary equipment, ensuring that all relevant paperwork is completed. Where competent and required operate gantry cranes, mobile empty and heavy lifting equipment, company vehicles, plant and ancillary equipment and internal movement vehicles as authorised to do so, giving flexibility as and when required. Arrive and depart freight trains strictly in accordance with Local Working Instructions, Personal & Safety Directive 0233, Working Manual for Rail Staff and management instructions Carry out wagon/container number checks on train arrivals, checking container locking mechanisms are unengaged and retrieving documents when requested by supervisor to assist and when it is safe and practical to do so. Where container storage areas are in existence undertake regular written physical checks of laden and empty areas. Undertake non-technical examinations of empty containers and record details of the check if required. Undertake train shunting duties. Ensure prompt reporting of any mishap, near miss, lifted wagons or any other problem, completing all relevant supporting documentation. Attend safety briefings and adhere to instructions contained therein. Attend any training course that will improve competence to meet job requirements and improve safety where mutually convenient. Management would reasonably expect staff to remain on duty during peak handling periods or where late running trains could potentially impact on the site’s ability to maintain a quality service for the company’s customers, provided that any exceedence of duty is properly authorised. Undertake non- traditional intermodal work (following training) for example car unloading, car parking etc. if business requirements deem necessary. Participate in the development of new staff in all aspects of terminal operations by conducting mentoring duties under the direction of the Freightliner National Training Manager. Assist in the general running and upkeep of the site within their skill base and capabilities. Where in existence operate signals, port/level crossings and change points as required prior to each shunting movement. Carry out brake tests, wagon examinations and light repairs as required by Group Standards, Local Working Instructions and management instructions. Where in existence assist in operation of overheight Detector on all departing freight services if required by Local Working Instructions. At all times maintain effective communication with other parties, for example FD&RC, SCT, relevant clerks and train drivers. Where in existence operate movement warning bell and work under laid down depot protection. Liaise with Police regarding traffic control when required by Port Duty Manager. Assist other Port Operatives and Engineers as required and instructed by Supervisor/Manager. Undertake other duties as directed by management commensurate with competence.
