Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust is seeking to appoint a Junior Clinical Fellow in intensive care medicine, with commencement dates of 5th February 2025. The tenure of all posts is 6 months with the possibility of extension up to 2 years by mutual agreement and depending upon service need. The posts do not attract a National Training Number.
The posts are based within the existing teams with access to departmental teaching and other developmental opportunities. Despite not being recognised as ‘training posts’, they allow doctors to improve the breadth and depth of their experience in Intensive Care Medicine. We are very supportive of those considering the CESR route and have had several fellows be successful in this process.
Full registration with the GMC with a licence to practise is required, and if the appointee does not hold right of residence in the UK, sponsorship will be required.
The general adult critical care services are currently provided on two sites, the Northern General Hospital (NGH) and the Royal Hallamshire Hospital (RHH). General adult critical care provides level 2 and 3 care to a wide range of patients supporting both the medical and surgical services. Sheffield Teaching Hospitals is one of three major trauma centres in the Yorkshire and Humberside region.
Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust is one of the UK’s busiest and most successful NHS foundation trusts. We provide a full range of local hospital and community services for people in Sheffield, as well as specialist care for patients from further afield, including cancer, spinal cord injuries, renal, and cardiothoracic services. In addition to community health services, the Trust comprises five of Yorkshire’s best known teaching hospitals:
1. The Royal Hallamshire Hospital
2. The Northern General Hospital
3. Charles Clifford Dental Hospital
4. Weston Park Cancer Hospital
5. Jessop Wing Maternity Hospital
The Trust has a history of high quality care, clinical excellence, and innovation in medical research. We strive to promote a culture of continuous quality improvement and encourage our staff to innovate and adopt ‘best practice’ in order to deliver the highest standard of care to our patients.
The critical care units are staffed by trainees from Anaesthesia undergoing ICM training at StR level as required by the Royal College of Anaesthetists, ACCS doctors, IM2 and F2 doctors, Advanced Critical Care Practitioners, and in the case of the NGH, an additional group of trainees training for a CCT in ICM.
Whilst in post, there will be plenty of opportunity to become involved in teaching, audit, and research. The Trust runs local courses for both the primary and final FRCA and strongly encourages clinical fellows to take part in those as needed.
The post holder will be expected to contribute to daytime activity and to take part in the out of hours on-call rota which is currently a 1 in 8.
